Abstract: This study aimed to determine the risk of ischemic heart disease (IHD) and stroke among male couriers in Korea by linking the data from the National Health Insurance (NHI) and National Employee Insurance (NEI) databases. Methods As of 2015, the NHI and NEI databases were linked using individual IDs. A cohort of male couriers, aged between 20 and 64 years, ( N = 5,012) was constructed using the Korean Employment Insurance Occupational Classification (KECO-2007). For comparison, a cohort of male total wage workers ( N = 5,429,176) and a cohort of office workers ( N = 632,848) within the same age group were also constructed. The follow-up was conducted until 31 December 2020 to confirm the occurrence of IHD and stroke. The diagnoses were defined using the 10th revision of the International Statistical Classification of Diseases and Related Health Problems (ICD-10) codes. The criteria included medical services for more than 1 day of hospitalization or more than 2 outpatient visits. The age-standardized incidence ratio (SIR) was calculated to evaluate the risk of occurrence. The hazard ratio (HR) was calculated using the Cox model after adjusting for age, alcohol consumption, smoking, obesity, income level, and employment duration as confounding variables. Results The SIR of IHD for couriers was 1.54 (95% CI 1.31–1.78), while for office workers, it was 1.08 (95% CI 1.06–1.10), compared to male total wage workers. The SIR for stroke was higher for couriers at 1.84 (95% CI 1.40–2.28) and lower for office workers at 0.86, compared to male total wage workers. Couriers had a higher SIR for stroke at 1.84 (95% CI 1.40–2.28) and lower for office workers at 0.86 (0.83–0.89). Compared to total wage workers, couriers had a significantly higher adjusted HR for IHD at 1.60 (95% CI 1.37–1.87) and a higher HR for stroke at 1.39 (95% CI 1.07–1.79). Compared to office workers, couriers had a significantly higher HR for IHD at 1.34 (95% CI 1.13–1.59) as well as for for stroke at 1.43 (95% CI 1.08–1.88). Conclusion The incidence of IHD and stroke was higher among male couriers compared to male office workers and total wage workers, highlighting the need for implementing public health interventions to prevent IHD and stroke among couriers.

Abstract: This study aimed to investigate whether severe retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) could be an association factor for neurodevelopmental disorders in premature infants without other risk factors—such as congenital anomalies, birth injuries, and neurological diseases—that may cause developmental delay. Methods We used health claims data recorded between 2007 and 2018 in the Korean National Health Insurance Service (KNHIS) database. We recruited a total of 18,256 premature infant born between 2007 and 2008 without congenital anomaly or birth injury (with ROP 6,995, without ROP 11,261) and divided them into four groups as follows: Group A, 209 extremely premature infants [gestational age (GA) & lt; 28] with mild ROP; Group B, 75 extremely premature infants (GA & lt; 28) with severe ROP; Group C, 6,510 other premature infants (28 ≤ GA & lt;37)with mild ROP; and Group D, 201 other premature infants (28 ≤ GA & lt; 37) with severe ROP. Using regression analysis, we analyzed whether there was a correlation between ROP prevalence, severity, and developmental delay in premature infants without other risk factors. Results The prevalence of developmental delay, according to GA and ROP severity, was higher in patients with severe ROP than in the other patients. The prevalence gradually decreased after birth. Among extremely premature infants with ROP, those with severe ROP had a 3.082-fold higher association with neurodevelopmental complications than those with mild ROP ( p & lt; 0.001). Compared with other premature infants with ROP, those with severe ROP had a 3.269-fold higher association with neurodevelopmental complications than those with mild ROP. Conclusion The severity of ROP may be associated with neurodevelopmental disorders in premature infants.

Abstract: Purpose: The purpose of the study was to identify nursing students’ stress and sleep quality during clinical practice and to determine effects of white noise on levels of stress and sleep quality. Methods: This pretest-posttest randomized experimental study included a total 44 nursing students (22 for experimental group, 22 for control group). The study was conducted for 2 months. White noise intervention was applied to experimental group; all participants measured levels of stress and sleep quality two times before randomization and at the end of the study. Data was analyzed using SPSS 28.0 program. Results: The mean age of the participants was 22.9±0.4 years, and a majority of them were female (70.%), and junior (97.7%). The mean levels of stress during clinical practice were 2.6±0.6 out of 5. The majority of participants (79.5%) had sleep disturbance; the mean sleep duration and sleep efficiency were 5.8 hours and 90.6%, respectively. There were no significant differences in levels of stress and sleep quality between experimental group and control group after intervention. Conclusion: The participants of the study had relatively lower levels of stress than previous studies, but they had severe sleep disturbances. In this study, there was no significant effects of white noise on sleep quality and stress, but it could be caused by differences in clinical duty, work environment, intervention compliance among students. Further research considering those factors as control variables is recommended.

Abstract: This study examines mathematics achievement for freshmen in engineering colleges pre and post COVID-19 pandemic. For this purpose, we have compared various aspects after converting these 3 results into 100 points which were the diagnostic assessment results that conducted immediately after the admission, the mid-term and final exam results from the 1st semester at the provincial university in 2019 and 2021. The findings are as follow; first of all, we were able to confirm the decline in scholastic ability in mathematics in 2021 as a result of the comparison in the diagnostic assessment before and after COVID-19. However, there was no statistically significant score gap on the midterm exam. On the other hand, a result of the final exam confirmed to have statistically significant higher points of post COVID-19 than pre. Secondly, according to the comparison outcome of the mathematics achievement that classified into the upper and lower-level groups using the diagnostic assessment, the final exam results declined at a statistically significant rate more than mid-term exam results for both upper-level group pre and post COVID-19. For the lower group, the final exam results had statistically significant growth compared to the mid-term in 2019, while there was no statistically significant difference in 2021. Finally, the upper groups’ aggregate results of mid & final exam were also compared, then the mathematics achievement was higher in post COVID-19 than before. And the lower groups comparison was not statistically significant gap. In conclusion, we found that online classes aggravated the gap between the upper and lower level groups in mathematics achievement. Furthermore, this indicate that the teaching methods for mathematics achievement is respectively, the online classes for upper groups, the face-to-face classes for lower groups.
