Wie Generationen vor ihm lebt auch Lakhinder als Vogelfänger. Doch im Umgang mit seiner Beute verfängt er sich selbst: Er beginnt die Vögel, die er fängt, mehr und mehr zu lieben. Und seit sein kleiner Sohn einen toten Vogel begraben hat, damit aus ihm ein Vogelbaum wachse, und am andern Tag selbst gestorben ist, kennt Lakhinder nur noch die eine Leidenschaft: seinen gefangenen Vögeln Freiheit und Leben wiederzugeben, ihren Flug als eigenes Glück zu erleben. Doch damit gerät er in Konflikt mit seiner Umgebung, vor allem mit seiner Faru, die ihn, der sie kaum noch zu ernähren weiss, verlässt. Lakhinder gibt sie und alles bisherige auf. Dafür folgt er seiner Liebe zu den Vögeln; im Schutz ihrer Flügel findet er seine innere Heimat, in der er sich selbst sein kann. Buddhadeb Dasgupta versucht uns mit seinem Film nahe zu bringen, dass man Traditionen aus ihnen selber heraus überwinden kann, um eine neue Freiheit zu gewinnen. Für seinen Protagonisten wird die Befreiung der Vögel zur Befreiung von sich selber. Der Film besingt gleichsam das Verhältnis des Menschen zur Schöpfung. Die Landschaft spielt in den ebenso schlichten wie magisch poetischen Schilderungen des Filmers eine elementare Rolle, der Fluss, die Bäume, die Ebenen. Mit grosser Liebe beschreibt Dasgupta das Leben des Volgelfängers. (Trigon-Film)
