Abstract:
Numerical models are an important tool for the analysis and assessment of fluvial processes and river engineering measures. In the two projects DREAM SK-AT (Interreg V‑A Slovakia—Austria) and SEDDON II (Interreg V‑A Austria—Hungary), utilization requirements regarding hydropower, floods, navigation, ecology and drinking water were analyzed and subsequently investigated by means of numerical models with the help of field measurements and physical experiments in Austria, Slovakia and Hungary. In this study, exemplary morphological characteristics, bedload management measures (groynes, bedload augmentation), and improved roughness determination from aerial photographs were investigated on the Danube in Austria and in the Austrian-Slovakian border section. Differences between the free-flowing section east of Vienna and the section influenced by the backwater of the Gabčíkovo power plant were found numerically with respect to bedload transport and morphodynamics. Groynes were identified as an important controlling parameter for achieving a morphological equilibrium based on a retrospective evaluation of previous pilot measures and on further scenario analyses. The first modeling of a sediment feeding in the numerical sediment transport model as well as the roughness determination by means of aerial photographs for the specification of hydrodynamic models in side-channels were successfully tested. The results and applied numerical tools from this study provide an important basis for the planning and evaluation of future river engineering measures, especially with regard to climate change adaptation as well as biodiversity enhancement.
