Abstract:
Secreted antibodies form the basis for protective vaccination, the most effective method of disease control to date. Plasma cells are the main producers of antibodies. A single plasma cell can secrete thousands of antibodies per second and thus forms the basis of humoral immunity of the body. While this function plays an important role to protect the body from recurring pathogens, autoreactive plasma cells secreting autoantibodies can lead to severe organ damage in diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis and systemic lupus erythematosus.
