Content: "For generations, Holocaust movies have become an important segment of world cinema and the de-facto holocaust education for many. They are so critically venerated that one-third of all American-produced Holocaust films have been nominated for at least one Oscar. Nonetheless, most Holocaust films have fallen through the cracks. In fact, few have even been commercially successful. This book explains these trends-and many others-in a complete guide to 300 Holocaust films and made-for-television movies. Here, Holocaust films from Anne Frank to Schindler's List to Jojo Rabbit are put into historical and artistic perspective and are discussed through many lenses: historically, chronologically, thematically, sociologically, geographically and individually. The filmmakers behind these films are also contextualized, including Charlie Chaplin, Sidney Lumet, Woody Allen, Steven Spielberg and Roman Polanski. This book also includes recommendations and reviews of the 50 best Holocaust films, an educational guide, and a detailed listing of each Holocaust film"--

    Series Statement: Short Histories
Content: In this exciting addition to Bloomsbury's Short Histories series, Steven Leonard Jacobs critically yet concisely examines the history of Judaism and the Jewish people, drawing from maps, photographs and archives to illuminate the history of one of the world's oldest religions. Beginning by establishing a definition of Judaism, Jacobs explores the historiography of the Jewish people, in addition to the role of memory in charting history. Including a comprehensive breakdown of the history of Judaism, the author splits discussion into defined eras, taking readers from the beginnings of Judaism, to the split between Judah in the South and Israel in the North, the united Monarchy, and the Age of the Prophets. Exploring the social structures and institutions of ancient Israel, Jacobs incorporates key themes such as civic life, economics, and art - before analysing the interactions of Judaism with Romanism and Hellenism. Moving through the Middle Ages and Pre-Modernity, and acknowledging the role of key figures such as Yosef Karo and Moses Mendelssohn, this book brings the narrative up to the present day, and uncovers the foundations of Judaism in modernity. Jacobs' authoritative yet engaging prose shines through each of the thirteen chapters, which seamlessly intertwine to produce a thorough yet concise examination of the history of Judaism and Jewish peoples

Content: This work by Jolanta Ambrosewicz-Jacobs is a fascinating contribution to the studies of Polish memory of the Holocaust, and particularly how it is shaped by the educational process. It is almost entirely based on results of quantitative and qualitative research conducted among young people in Poland in 2008. The goal was to assess students' knowledge of the Holocaust, their attitude towards Jews and the scale of antisemitic convictions amongst them. The respondents replied to questions raised following the publication of Neighbors by Jan Tomasz Gross, which resulted not only in stormy debate on the participation of some Poles in the Holocaust, but also in new research on this subject. Have these new findings about the dark pages in Polish history permeated the curricula and content of school textbooks? Have they found their reflection in the consciousness of young people? Jolanta Ambrosewicz-Jacobs answers these questions in this insightful work which explores the numerous meanders of education about the Holocaust in Poland.〈i〉Islands of Memory〈/i〉 may be seen as an endorsement of non-conventional forms of educating about the Holocaust, of the local initiatives to commemorate it and the educational efforts undertaken beyond the school walls by teachers and volunteers who act as guardians of memory. We might not find their names in the headlines, but this book is very much about them.' Piotr Forecki, professor of the Adam Mickiewicz University in Poznañ

Series Statement: Religion in politics and society today
Content: With an overview essay, timeline, reference entries, and annotated bibliography, this resource is a concise, one-stop reference on antisemitism in today's society.Stretching back to biblical times, antisemitism is perhaps the world's oldest hatred of a group. It has manifested itself around the world, sometimes taking the form of superficially innocent jokes and at other times promoting such tragedies as the Holocaust. Far from disappeared, its continued existence in today's society is evidenced by vandalism of Jewish cemeteries and shootings at synagogues. This book explores the causes and consequences of contemporary antisemitism, placing this form of hatred in its historical, political, and social contexts. An overview essay surveys the background and significance of antisemitism and provides historical context for discussions of contemporary topics. A timeline highlights key events related to antisemitism. Some 50 alphabetically arranged reference entries provide objective, fundamental information about people, events, and other topics related to antisemitism. These entries cite works for further reading and provide cross-references to related topics. An annotated bibliography cites and evaluates some of the most important resources on antisemitism suitable for student research.
