Note: This book offers an overview of key findings in groundwater management in context against the legislative milestones, Until recently, focus on groundwater mainly concerned its use as drinking water and as an important resource for industry (e.g. cooling waters) and agriculture (irrigation). It has, however, become increasingly obvious that groundwater should not only be viewed as a drinking water reservoir, but that it should also be protected for its environmental value. In this respect, groundwater represents an important link of the hydrological cycle through the maintenance of wetlands and river flows, acting as a buffer through dry periods. Hence, deterioration of groundwater quality may directly affect other related aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems. The groundwater legislative framework under the EU Water Framework Directive and the newly adopted Groundwater Directive establishes criteria linked to environmental objectives which have to be met by 2015 following successive operational steps including characterisation, risk assessment (analysis of pressures and impacts), monitoring and design of programmes of measures. These milestones require that sound technical and scientific information be made accessible to water managers, which is so far still not sufficiently streamlined. In this context, this book describes the groundwater legislative milestones and presents series of research and development activities that aim to directly support them. It has, therefore, the ambition to become a vehicle liaising policy requirements and available scientific knowledge in this area

Series Statement: Routledge contemporary Japan series
Content: Adding a new perspective to the current literature on decentralization in Japan, Cities, Autonomy and Decentralization in Japan, approaches the subject from an urban studies and planning approach. The essays in the collection present a cogent compilation of case studies focusing on the past, present and future of decentralization in Japan. These include small scale development in the fields such as citizen participation (machizukuri), urban form and architecture, disaster prevention and conservation of monuments. The contributors suggest that new trends are emerging after the bursting of Japan's economic bubble and assess them in the context of the country's larger socio-political system. This in-depth analysis of the development outside of Japan provides a valuable addition to students of Urban, Asian and Japanese Studies.
Content: Introduction: decentralization and the tension between global and local urban Japan / Carola Hein and Philippe Pelletier -- Local initiatives and the decentralization of planning power in Japan / Ishida Yorifusa -- Concentration and deconcentration in the context of the Tokyo capital region plan and recent cross-border networking concepts / Nakabayashi Itsuki -- Financial problems in the Japanese local public sector in the 1990s: situation, structural reasons, solutions / Alain Schebath -- Centralization, urban planning, governance, and citizen participation in Japan / Andre Sorensen -- Machizukuri in Japan: a historical perspective on participatory community-building initiatives / Watanabe Shunichi J. -- Whose Kyoto? Competing models of local autonomy and townscape in the old imperial capital / Christoph Brumann -- Conclusion: decentralization policies: questioning the Japanese model / Carola Hein and Philippe Pelletier.

Content: An introduction to differential geometry in [symbol] / Philippe G. Ciarlet -- An Introduction to shell Theory / Philippe G. Ciarlet, Cristinel Mardare -- Some new results and current challenges in the finite element analysis of shells / Dominique Chapelle -- A differential geometry approach to mesh generation / Pascal Frey.
Content: This book gives the basic notions of differential geometry, such as the metric tensor, the Riemann curvature tensor, the fundamental forms of a surface, covariant derivatives, and the fundamental theorem of surface theory in a self-contained and accessible manner. Although the field is often considered a "classical" one, it has recently been rejuvenated, thanks to the manifold applications where it plays an essential role. The book presents some important applications to shells, such as the theory of linearly and nonlinearly elastic shells, the implementation of numerical methods for shells, and mesh generation in finite element methods. This volume will be very useful to graduate students and researchers in pure and applied mathematics
