Robinson steht auf einem Feld, mit beiden Händen einen Holzspaten haltend. Neben ihm hält ein bärtiger Mann mit beiden Händen eine Schaufel, die er mit dem linken Fuß in einen angedeuteten Graben stößt. Hinter ihm steht ein Korb mit Pflanzen- und Wurzelwerk. Rechts im Hintergrund trägt ein Mann, durch die Kleidung als Eingeborener zu erkennen, einen schweren Korb, zur rechten Seite Robinsons zieht ein weiterer Eingeborener in tief gebückter Haltung eine Pflanze aus der Erde. Am vorderen Bildrand rechts stöbert ein Hund in dem aufgewühlten Boden.
