Elbridge Gerry war ein Gouverneur von Massachusetts, der 1812 die Grenzen seines Wahlkreises zu seine Gunsten so hemmungslos willkürlich neu zuschneiden ließ, dass dabei die exotische Form eines Salamanders herauskam. Seitdem nennt man dieses Verfahren in der Politikwissenschaft "Gerrymandering" - bis heute in den USA eine von den beiden großen Lagern geübte Praxis.
