Der Zerfallsprozess des sowjetischen Vielvölkerreiches vollzog sich mit großer Rasanz, und am 25. Dezember 1991 war der Tag gekommen: Mit den Worten "Ich wünsche Ihnen alles Gute!" erklärte der sowjetische Präsident Michail Gorbatschow die Auflösung der UdSSR. Damit erlangten die 15 Sowjetrepubliken endgültig ihre Unabhängigkeit, nachdem sie zum Teil über 70 Jahre dem sowjetischen Imperium angehört hatten. 20 Jahre sind seitdem vergangen, und ähnlich wie menschliche Biografien verliefen die Karrieren der Nachfolgestaaten der UdSSR höchst unterschiedlich. Vom wirtschaftlich aufstrebenden, demokratisch geprägten Musterschüler bis hin zum von Instabilität und Armut gezeichneten Sorgenkind reicht die Bandbreite der Entwicklungen, die die "Klasse von 1991" nahm. Der Historiker Thomas Kunze und der Journalist Thomas Vogel bereisten die früheren Mitgliedstaaten der Sowjetunion viele Male. Sie berichten anschaulich, fesselnd und anekdotenreich von Ländern und Völkern, die vieles trennt, aber ebenso viel verbindet.
