Mit dem Band "Geographische Predigten" (KMW I.1) liegt jetzt der in der Zählung erste Band der „Historisch-kritischen Ausgabe“ vor. Er enthält im Wesentlichen die Arbeiten, die Karl May als Redakteur verschiedener Zeitschriften anfertigte, bevor er endgültig zum freien Schriftsteller wurde. Im Zentrum stehen diverse Aufsätze populärwissenschaftlicher Natur, allen voran die Geographischen Predigten selbst, die May zeitlebens als Basis seines schriftstellerischen Schaffens betrachtete. Hinzu kommen vielfältige Texte zur seinerzeit aktuellen Entwicklung in der Bergbau- und Maschinenindustrie, die May für die Zeitschrift „Schacht und Hütte“ zusammenstellte sowie redaktionelle Texte, darunter Mays sämtliche Leserbriefantworten. Schließlich enthält der Band auch die seinerzeit von May veröffentlichten frühen Gedichte, die Einblick in eine ganz andere Facette seines Schaffens geben. Mit dem Band Geographische Predigten werden innerhalb der HKA frühe Texte Karl Mays vorgelegt, die der breiteren Öffentlichkeit bisher weitgehend unbekannt waren.
