Betonte die Hamburger Ausstellung 1997 den Realisten ("Max Liebermann - Der Realist und die Phantasie": in dieser Nr.), so legt die Wiener Ausstellung (bis Januar 1998) einen Hauptakzent auf Liebermanns Impressionisten-Sammlung, die mit vielen kommentierten Bildbeispielen (Cezanne, Degas, Renoir usw.) vorgestellt und kommentiert wird; heute befinden sich die Bilder in verschiedenen privaten und öffentlichen Sammlungen. Ein eigenes Kapitel behandelt Liebermanns Kunstsammlung im Spiegel seiner Briefe, vgl. auch den Aufsatz von P. Krieger in "Max Liebermann in seiner Zeit" (BA 12/79, 416). Daneben gibt es u.a. Beiträge zu Liebermanns Judentum (vgl. auch den Hamburger Ausstellungsbegleitband, s.o.) und zur Rezeption des Werkes im geteilten Deutschland. Empfohlen neben "Max Liebermann, der deutsche Impressionist" (ID 15/96), wobei zu beachten ist, daß die Liebermann-Literatur der letzten Jahre insgesamt intensiv die verschiedenen Werkaspekte behandelte.
