Rezension: August der Starke gilt als "der" Barockfürst schlechthin. Sein leidenschaftliches Leben wurde geprägt von Machtstreben, Sinnenfreude und Kunstverständnis. Er machte Dresden zum bewunderten "Elbflorenz", liess den Zwinger erbauen und sammelte die heute im Grünen Gewölbe ausgestellten Kostbarkeiten. Wenn er auch nicht die ihm nachgesagten 364 unehelichen Kinder zeugte, so wurden es immerhin 8 anerkannte Sprösslinge von verschiedenen Mätressen - und ein einziger ehelicher Sohn, der ihm nachfolgte. August verstrickte Sachsen aber auch in politische Abenteuer, die nicht immer gut ausgingen. Für die Krone Polens wechselte er bedenkenlos die Konfession. Dieses farbige Schicksal beschreibt Katja Doubek ebenso anschaulich wie mitreissend. Nichts kommt zu kurz: Neben den politischen Entwicklungen hat auch die detaillierte Schilderung des Privatlebens des Herrschers ihre Berechtigung (was bei anderen Darstellungen, die ähnlich knapp gehalten sind, oft nicht der Fall ist und durchschnittliche Leser/-innen entsprechend langweilt).
