Abstract: The study was conducted to observe the pattern of ocular morbidities in patients attending the ophthalmology department during the COVID-19 pandemic. : A prospective observational study was conducted in a tertiary eye care centre in Central India from 1 January 2020 to 31 December 2020, among a total of 982 patients with ocular manifestations who attended the outpatient department or emergency department. A detailed history was taken and a complete anterior and posterior segment examination was done. The standard investigation and treatment protocol of the institution was followed in all cases. : A total of 982 patients were enrolled in our study with a mean age of 36.42±18.05 years. Male preponderance was noted with an M: F ratio of 2.43. A wide spectrum of ocular manifestations during COVID-19 was observed. The anterior segment was involved in 85.1% and the posterior segment was involved in 14.9% and most common ocular manifestations affecting the anterior segment were noted as computer vision syndrome observed in 18.1% cases, followed by cataracts in 11.4% cases. : Various programs should be implemented to help in reducing the load of visual disability and blindness in the community which is increased after the COVID outbreak. With changing trends in geographical and socio-economical patterns of diseases, similar kinds of a pandemic may occur in the future. There should be formation of flexible government strategies for changing dynamics that can be timely implemented in the future for better management of curable/avoidable diseases.

Abstract: : The present study aimed to determine the prevalence and pattern of ocular manifestation in HIV positive patients and to correlate ocular lesions with CD4 counts in HIV positive patients. The study was conducted as an observational study on seropositive HIV patients attending ART center and OPD department of ophthalmology during the study period of 2 years. Detailed sociodemographic and clinical history was obtained. Patients were subjected to thorough ophthalmologic evaluation and necessary investigations and findings were noted. Ocular manifestations could be observed in 36 (52.2%) cases. Among them, unilateral ocular manifestations were observed in 11 (15.9%) cases and bilateral involvement in 25 (36.2%) out of 69 patients. A wide spectrum of ocular manifestations were observed, most commonly of posterior segment. Ocular manifestations were not significantly associated with CD4 count (p & #62;0.05) except CMV retinitis which was significantly associated with lower CD4 count ( & #60;150 in 14.3% cases). Papilledema was significantly associated with higher CD4 count (p & #60;0.05). Ocular manifestations in HIV positive patients has a wide range of presentation. Every HIV patient must be educated about their ocular condition and should be advised to undergo regular ophthalmic examinations. Health care professionals also should be educated and trained in every aspect so as to pick up early cases of ophthalmic manifestations of HIV and should have coordination with ART center for easy assessment, detection and treating of vision-threatening ocular lesions at the earliest possible.

Abstract: Aim: The aim of this study is to identify the factors affecting spontaneous regression of Retinopathy of prematurity. Methods and Material: All the neonates with gestational age of 〈 37 weeks and/or 〈 2kgs birth weight were screened and demographic data and data regarding the risk factors were noted at the start of study from their birth cards and medical cards they carried with them and was noted in a proforma. In those neonates in whom the Retinopathy of Prematurity presented or progressed to type 1 ROP were treated. Rest of them were followed as per ICROP (2005) guidelines till complete vascularisation. Risk factors were compared between the two groups. The Statistical analysis was performed by SPSS 23.0 version. In the study 426 neonates were screened of them 183 eyes of 94 n Results: eonates had ROP. Sixty three neonates had spontaneous regression and 31 were treated as per ETROP guidelines. Mean gestational age in spontaneous regression group was 32.24±2.14 weeks, and that of treatment group was 29.9 ±2.44 weeks. This difference was statistically significant (P 〈 0.001). Mean birth weight in spontaneous regression group was 1449.84±288 grams, and that of treatment group was 1309.93 ±291.06 grams. This difference was statistically significant (P=0.023). Oxygenation and NICU hospitalisation 〈 1 week, anemia and blood transfusion, lesser weight gain in the initial 6 weeks were found to significantly affect spontaneous regression of ROP (P 〈 0.005). Higher gestational age, Oxygenation and NICU hospitalisation 〈 1week were found to independently influence spontaneous regression of ROP. Conclusions: The gestational age of infant is an important predicting factor in spontaneous regression of ROP. Longer duration of oxygenation and NICU hospitalisation are important factors affecting spontaneous regression of ROP inversely.

Abstract: Corneal diseases are one of the leading causes of visual loss and blindness, after cataracts and glaucoma across the globe. Management of corneal blindness requires corneal transplantation which is dependent on voluntary corneal donations and needs tremendous post-operative care and follow-up. The success of the procedure depends upon various donor and recipient factors that need to be studied. A prospective study was conducted in the eye bank of the tertiary care eye center in central India after getting the approval of the institutional ethical committee. A total of 26 eyes of 13 donors were studied, out of which 23 eyes underwent penetrating keratoplasty, among these, 3 eyes underwent therapeutic penetrating keratoplasty, 16 eyes underwent optical penetrating keratoplasty and 4 eyes underwent triple procedures. Recipients were followed up at 1 week, 1 month, and 3rd months, and data were analyzed. Graft survival was significantly better in the recipients without pre-operative corneal vascularization (p=0.004). Corneas from a donor with open eyelids showed significantly poor graft survival. This was statistically significant (p= 0.047). On the other hand, based on donor lens status, we did not find any difference in the survival of the graft. Practices like lid closure and eye drop installation should be promoted from the time of death, for preserving donor tissue quality. HCRP should be promoted and practiced at the national level as it is effective in increasing the rate of eye donation and positively affects graft outcomes.

Abstract: Retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) is a serious condition affecting premature infants and identifying maternal risk factors is essential for its prevention. This study aimed to identify maternal risk factors associated with ROP in preterm newborns at a tertiary care center. This cross-sectional study was conducted between August 2021 and September 2022 at a tertiary care center. All preterm and low birth weight neonates attending the ROP clinic or admitted to the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) were included, while term neonates and those weighing ≥2.5 kgs with anterior segment/posterior segment pathology other than ROP were excluded. Data on maternal and neonatal characteristics were obtained and inferential analysis was conducted using the chi-square test and Student’s t-test. Out of 410 preterm newborns included, 109 were diagnosed with ROP, indicating an institutional incidence of 26.58%. Advanced maternal age, low socio-economic status, urinary tract infection, chorioamnionitis, multiple pregnancy, pre-eclampsia, maternal anemia, history of asthma and steroid use during pregnancy were significantly associated with ROP. This study highlights the importance of addressing modifiable maternal risk factors to reduce the incidence of ROP in premature infants. Screening for ROP should be prioritized for neonates born to mothers with these risk factors to improve visual outcomes.

Abstract: The study aimed to assess the prevalence of ocular involvement in children 6 months to 5 years attending tertiary care centre with Severe Acute Malnutrition and to detect the associated risk factors for ocular morbidity in severe acute malnutrition. : This hospital based observational study was carried out at Gandhi Medical College, during the study period of 2 years on children diagnosed with SAM belonging to 6 months to 5 years of age. Detailed history was obtained and physical, systemic and ocular examination was done. : A total of 100 severe acute malnourished children were included. Prevalence of ocular involvement in severe acute malnourished children was 72%. Conjunctival pallor was observed in 71.5% eyes and retinal hemorrhages were most common posterior segment finding. Vitamin A deficiency signs were observed in 17 eyes (8.5%). Higher birth order and number of sibling was significantly associated with higher incidence of ocular manifestations (p & #60;0.05). However, other variables showed no significant association between other variables and ocular manifestations (p & #62;0.05). Training should be given to health workers at the primary health care level and health centers on counseling mothers on feeding, growth monitoring, the preventable eye blinding diseases and hygiene during the vaccination sessions and early referral of children with eye signs to hospitals. Also education of couple regarding proper nutrition of mother and child should be encouraged and couples should be insisted to have not more than two children.

Abstract: The aim of this study was to identify the factors influencing the duration of spontaneous regression of Retinopathy of Prematurity. A prospective observational study was conducted over a duration of 1.5 years from December, 2019 to May, 2021. All the infants presenting with ROP or developed any stage later were considered for the study and were followed up as per International Classification of Retinopathy Guidelines (ICROP), 2005 guidelines till compete vascularisation. Data regarding the birth history and maternal factors were noted. In those neonates in whom the Retinopathy of Prematurity presented or progressed to type 1 ROP were treated and the rest were followed up till complete vascularisation and duration noted. Risk factors were compared in neonates undergoing spontaneous regression within 45 weeks PMA and those taking longer than 45 weeks. The Statistical analysis was performed by SPSS 23.0 version. Mean gestational age in neonates undergoing earlier spontaneous regression ( & #60;45 weeks) was 31.86±2.02 months, and that of delayed spontaneous regression group was 33±2.24 months. Mean birth weight in earlier spontaneous regression group was 1537.14±202.02 grams, and that delayed spontaneous regression group was 1406.19±229.88 grams. Mean duration of complete regression of ROP is 44.9 weeks postmenstrual age. Higher birth weight and Hyperbilirubinemia was found to significantly cause the regression of ROP within 45 weeks (P=0.021). Higher birth weight and Hyperbilirubinemia was found to cause earlier regression of ROP and hence could be a possible protective factor in the pathogenesis of ROP.
