Content: Mergers and remedies in the EU : an overview -- The literature on merger remedies -- Classification of merger remedies -- Methodology for assessment of mergers and remedies -- Structure and competitive process in paper and board markets -- Assessment of remedies adopted by the EC in paper mergers --Structure and competitive process in pharmaceuticals markets -- Assessment of remedies adopted by the EC in pharmaceuticals mergers -- Conclusions and recommendations.
Content: Headlines are made when the European Commission prohibits a merger, but this is actually very rare. Clearances subject to conditions (i.e. remedies) happen ten times as frequently, but have received far less attention in academic literature. This book provides an empirical assessment of the effectiveness of merger remedies, employing a novel simulation methodology based on formal economic theory. The authors were given unprecedented access to data available to case handlers, concerning a range of remedied mergers covering 21 markets. Using this they have adapted simple simulation techniques to appraise the competitive effects of these mergers and the impact of potential and actual remedies. Ex-ante results are then compared with ex-post impact to examine the actual effectiveness of remedies. The results provide a critique of both simple market share analysis and remedy design. This research thus contributes to economics research and practical merger policy

Content: 'This is an excellent book. Bruce Kaufman, in his ever thoughtful way, has not just analyzed the history of the development of HRM, but assembled 17 chapters in which world-class local experts report on that history in their own country. The book is full of fascinating information, stories and analysis and will be a touchstone text for everyone wanting to break out of the usual narrow ethnocentric view that often afflicts studies of HRM.'--Chris Brewster, University of Reading, UK. This innovative book describes the historical development of human resource management (HRM) in seventeen countries around the world. The chapters, written by national experts, describe the origin of HRM in the late 19th - early 20th century and its evolution and development as a business practice to the present day. Offering a comprehensive cross-disciplinary perspective, the chapters discuss the economic, political and social factors that shaped HRM in each country, including the role of national labor movements and labor law regimes. The authors also provide an examination of HR practices and systems within firms, starting with rudimentary hiring and compensation a century ago, progressing to personnel and industrial relations programs in the last century, and culminating in modern human resource management practices today, including strategic high-performance systems. This unique book is the first to identify the commonalities and differences in HRM both across nations and over time. A book with real international appeal, 'The Development of Human Resource Management Across Nations' will interest researchers, students and practitioners involved with management, industrial relations, labor economics, organizational behavior and employment law

Series Statement: Advances in Chinese economic studies
Content: This unique annotated bibliography contains the most important studies of the Chinese business environment, comprising almost 1000 references to articles published in English-language journals in the past fifteen years or so. The editors have sought to focus on those writings that deal fairly directly with the impact of the Chinese business environment on foreign firms doing business in China. Each work is fully referenced in a standard format, has a brief description of its subject matter and has been given a classification code - ensuring quick and easy identification of all articles on any given subject. The indexes include a joint author index and a subject classification index which make the bibliography easily navigable and usable. There is also an introduction by the editors explaining the rationale behind the book and the selection criteria, along with a description of how it may be used most efficiently. This book will serve as an invaluable reference book for scholars and researchers of Asian studies - China most particularly - and international business. Senior executives and middle level managers of multinational corporations who have been operating in, or who wish to do business in and with China would also find this a useful and rich source of information

Content: Managing Value-Based Organizations argues that those who fail to understand management history are destined to repeat it. Research has shown that despite the prodigious output of management books, managers still have little idea why there is so much change in the world of work or what they can do about it. Most, it seems, are still waiting for the dust to settle, expecting instead that in the near future they will be able to go back to doing things the way they have always done them

Series Statement: New horizons in environmental economics
Content: Controlling Pollution in Transition Economies examines and evaluates the recent experience of implementing pollution charges and the use of environmental permits in Central and Eastern Europe and Russia. The book focuses on controlling point-source air and water pollution. It describes and analyses the experience of implementing pollution charges and fines, and the interactions of these fiscal instruments with systems of pollution permits. The ten country case studies have been written by specialists who have been or are actively involved with the development or revision of pollution charges. Based on the experience of these countries, general conclusions are drawn for implementing pollution charge systems in other contexts. This book will encourage new theoretical and empirical work on the problem of implementing economic instruments (pollution charges), in combination with 'command-and-control' instruments (pollution permits). Practitioners and policy analysts as well as graduate students, academics, researchers and environmental consultants will find this book an important contribution to the existing literature

Content: Does Financial Deregulation Work? studies the process of financial deregulation in the United States. It exposes the basic flaws in the deregulationist approach and advances a new framework for effective financial regulation. Bruce Coggins provides a detailed and comprehensive critique of the reasoning behind deregulation, including marginal analysis and Friedman's monetarism. He challenges this thinking and proposes an alternative set of assumptions drawn from the historical and institutional approach to industrial organization and post Keynesian monetary theory. The author concludes that stability in financial systems is dependent upon a regulatory regime which focuses on limiting competition and encouraging productive over speculative investment. This book will prove invaluable to financial economists and analysts interested in the controversy over bank deregulation. It will also be of interest to those using post Keynesian, institutionalist and industrial organization approaches to economic analysis as well as to students and professors of law and regulation and those interested in problems of financial instability

Content: This timely book offers a fresh view on how oceans and coasts are, and should be, managed. The urgency of this issue is increasingly being recognized, as critical limits to the economic exploitation of our oceans and coasts are reached. The authors argue that ecological economics is in a unique position to address this problem given its particular focus on interconnected ecological and economic systems. Four 'cornerstones' of this ecological economics approach to the oceans and coasts are presented; most importantly, sustainability is the overarching policy goal, rather than economic efficiency, as I soften emphasized in mainstream economics. Secondly, recognizing the biophysical limits and thresholds of marine systems is fundamental. Thirdly, a complex systems view is adopted, which has profound implications for managing marine systems in the face of intrinsic uncertainty, irreversibility and interdependent behaviour. Finally, the approach is necessarily methodologically pluralistic, given the complexity and multi-faceted character of marine ecological-economic systems. Ecological Economics of the Oceans and Coasts is a unique book that will be warmly welcomed by ecological economists, researchers and academics of coastal and marine management and policy as well as natural resource and environmental economists. Policy advisors on oceans and coasts, coastal and marine managers will also find this book of great interest and value
