Autobiografischer Roman. Als bei seinem Sohn Jesse, 16, massive Schulschwierigkeiten auftauchen, zeigt der kanadische Journalist und Filmkritiker David Gilmour Verständnis. Er begreift, dass sein Sohn die Schule hasst, erlaubt ihm die Schullaufbahn abzubrechen. Aber Jesse muss sich einer Art "Home-Teaching" unterziehen, er soll mit seinem Vater Filme ansehen, die gemeinsam einer Analyse unterzogen werden. 3 Jahre verbringen Vater und Sohn so miteinander, 3 Jahre, in denen Jesse heranreift und erstaunlich offen seinen Vater an seinen pubertären Problemen teilhaben lässt. Nicht nur die Filme, die der Autor unter bestimmten pädagogischen Aspekten auswählt, auch z.B. Jesses unglückliche Liebe, werden Thema der Gespräche. Roman, der als Initiationsroman gelesen werden kann, auf alle Fälle ein Roman, der Mut machen kann, seinen Kindern den Freiraum zu schaffen, dessen sie bedürfen. Jesse holt später in einem Crash-Kurs alle entgangene Bildung nach. Bei den Filmen, über die der Autor spricht, handelt es sich fast nur um bekannte Klassiker. Dies kann sicher oft Aha-Erlebnisse beim Leser auslösen. Für viele.
