Der Adel in der Habsburgermonarchie sah sich aufgrund der frühneuzeitlichen Herrschaftsverdichtung dazu gezwungen, sich neu zu organisieren. Nicht mehr ein Herkunftsland bestimmte seine Identität, sondern dieser neue „habsburgische“ Adel definierte sich über seine Landstandschaft in mehreren Ländern der zusammengesetzten Habsburgermonarchie. Besondere Bedeutung kam dabei der Konfession des Adels zu, zumal die Gegenreformation in den österreichischen Ländern andere konfessionelle Rahmenbedingungen als etwa in Böhmen/Mähren oder Ungarn schuf. Nicht nur Kirchenordnungen, adelige Stiftungen und Spitalgründungen, Kavaliersreisen, sondern auch das Frömmigkeitsverständnis des Adels änderte sich in der Frühen Neuzeit grundlegend. Konversionen waren häufig, aber auch adelige Intoleranz gegenüber anderen Konfessionen änderte sich, wie die 15 Beiträger aus insgesamt acht Ländern in ihren Texten verdeutlichen.

Angaben zur beteiligten Person Catalano: Alessandro Catalano (geb. 1970) studierte Slawistik in Rom und promovierte dort im Jahr 2002. Er war an den Universitäten von Florenz, Pisa, Wien und Prag tätig und unterrichtet seit Ende 2006 tschechische Literatur an der Università degli studi di Padova. Er arbeitete zur Geschichte der Beziehungen zwischen Italien und Mitteleuropa sowie zur Geschichte der Gegenreformation in Böhmen. Außerdem publizierte er zur neueren tschechischen Literatur und übersetzte Literatur ins Italienische. Gemeinsam mit Simone Guagnelli gibt er die slawistische Zeitschrift »eSamizdat« (http://www.esamizdat.it) heraus.
