Der Autor lehrt Soziologie in Tel Aviv. Die eine israelische Gesellschaft gebe es nicht, so der Autor. Vielmehr stritten unterschiedliche Gruppierungen um die Deutungshoheit der Identität in einem Land, in dem "Staat, Nation und Religion untrennbar miteinander verbunden sind". Diesen Kampf bringt er dem Leser nahe in 10 Beschreibungen israelischer Realität. Der arabische Fussballer, der unter jüdischen Symbolen für die Nationalmannschaft spielt; der Mörder von Ministerpräsident Rabin, der die Tat mit dem Talmud rechtfertigt, weil Rabin "heiligen Boden dem Feind überlassen wollte"; differierender Umgang mit dem Holocaust; das Aufeinandertreffen osteuropäischer, orientalischer, russischer Juden und ihrer unterschiedlichen religiösen, politischen und kulturellen Vorstellungen; der Umgang mit Geflüchteten ... Am Ende geht es "um den Konflikt zwischen der Loyalität zur eigenen Nation ... und der Loyalität zu universellen Gerechtigkeitsprinzipien ...", dessen Ausgang offen ist. (3)
