1956 übersiedelte Miró im Alter von 63 Jahren nach Mallorca. Sein Rückzug auf die Insel war eine bewusste Flucht von der eigenen ruhmreichen Vergangenheit in den Weltmetropolen wie New York, Paris und Barcelona und brachte einen Neubeginn. Hier entstand Mirós wenig bekanntes Spätwerk, in dem seine rebellische Natur und nonkonformistische Geisteshaltung besonders deutlich zum Ausdruck kamen. In den seit 1973 entstandenen verbrannten Leinwänden verabschiedete er sich gänzlich von dem ihm einst von A. Breton bescheinigten kindlichen Gemüt und folgte seinem eigenen, bereits in den 20er-Jahren verkündeten Leitmotiv der "Ermordung der Malerei". Er überschritt die Grenzen, zeigte eine neue, heftige, gestische Malweise und bewies, dass es für einen Künstler nie zu spät ist, mit Innovationen zu beginnen.
