Nach dem Sturz der kommunistischen Regime in Osteuropa dürfte es an der Zeit sein, die Frage zu stellen, ob die "klassische" oder "strukturelle" Version der Totalitarismustheorie, diejenige Hannah Arendts und Carl J. Friedrichs, die einzig maßgebliche sein kann. In ihrer Ausrichtung auf die Norm des "westlichen Verfassungsstaates" hat sie ja wenig Verständnis für die machtvollen Kräfte jenes genuinen Enthusiasmus an den Tag gelegt, die in den totalitären Bewegungen und Regimen des 20. Jahrhunderts wirksam waren. Diese Schwäche suchte die "sozialreligiöse" Version der Theorie zu beheben, die auf sehr unterschiedliche Weise von Ernst Bloch, Eric Voegelin und Norman Cohn entwickelt wurde. Eine dritte, die "historisch-genetische" Version der Theorie, läßt der Verfasser des vorliegenden Aufsatzes mit dem 1952 erschienenen ersten Band von Jacob L. Talmons "The Origins of Totalitarian Democracy" beginnen. Abschließend versucht er zu zeigen, daß wichtige Desiderate gleichwohl unerfüllt blieben und daß er seit 1963 einen wesentlichen Beitrag zur Ausfüllung dieser Lücken geleistet hat, einen Beitrag, der allerdings aus bestimmten Gründen zu gravierenden Fehlinterpretationen Anlaß gab. After the downfall of the Communist regimes in Eastern Europe the time may have come to put the question whether the "classical" or "structural" version of the theory of totalitarianism as worked out by Hannah Arend and Carl J. Friedrich can be looked upon as the only standard one. Keyed on the norm of the "Western Constitutional state" it has shown little understanding for the enormous power of that genuine enthusiasm inherent in the totalitarian movements and regimes of the 20th century. The "social-religious" version of the theory - worked out in different ways by Ernst Bloch, Eric Voegelin and Norman Cohn - tried to make good this deficiency. The author of this article presents a third, the "historic-genetic" version, beginning with Vol. I. of Jacob L. Talmon's "The Origins of Totalitarian Democracy". In conclusion he shows, that nevertheless important desiderata are still existing, and that, since 1963, he has tried to do his share to fill the gaps - a contribution which for certain reasons, however, has given rise to serious misinterpretations.
