Das reich illustrierte Heft aus der Reihe "Geo Epoche" bietet 20 Artikel zu den wichtigsten Aspekten, alle auf neuestem Forschungsstand. Rezension: Das Thema füllt bekanntlich Bibliotheken und wird permanent neu bearbeitet (z.B. N. Davies: "Die grosse Katastrophe", 2009; A. Roberts: "Feuersturm", 2019). Das Problem aber lautet, wie finden nachgeborene Generationen und Laien einen Zugang zu der komplexen Ära und zu ihrer gegenwärtigen Bedeutung. Dazu bietet das vorliegende "GEO Epoche"-Heft einen vorzüglichen Einstieg. In 20 Artikeln werden nicht alle, aber die wichtigsten Aspekte für eine erste Orientierung beschrieben und zwar auf aktuellem Forschungsstand. Chronologisch geordnet, von Hitler-Stalin-Pakt und Kriegsausbruch über den Vernichtungskrieg im Osten und der Shoa bis hin zu der Neuordnung Europas unter Einfluss der UdSSR. Nicht Schlachten stehen im Vordergrund, sondern die Kriegsziele Nazi-Deutschlands und dessen sehr unterschiedliche Besatzungspolitik und die Konzeptionen der Anti-Hitler-Koalition in Ost und West. - Sehr gut verständlich und flüssig geschrieben kann dies zu einer vertiefenden Beschäftigung mit diesem noch heute auch tagespolitisch wirksamen grossen Krieg motivieren. Passt gut zu "1937-39" dieser Reihe. (1 S)
