Lange Zeit war die Kunst Spaniens über die Landesgrenzen hinaus wenig bekannt und wissenschaftlich kaum erforscht. Erst gegen Ende des 19. Jahrhunderts setzte ein Prozess der kunstgeschichtlichen Kanonisierung ein. Eine wesentliche Rolle spielten dabei neu entwickelte fotomechanische Vervielfältigungstechniken. In Form von Reproduktionen wurden Künstler wie Velázquez, Goya, Murillo und El Greco einem größeren Publikum bekannt, das die Originale nicht kannte. Um 1900 erschlossen Verlage mit fotografischen Kampagnen die Bestände des Prado in Madrid und konkurrierten in der kommerziellen Vermarktung der Motive. Der vorliegende Band geht diesen Popularisierungsprozessen nach und zeigt, auf welchen textlichen und bildlichen Ebenen die spanische Kunst Verbreitung fand.
