In den gesellschaftlichen Legitimationen von Theater ist eine Verschiebung zu beobachten: Oft reicht es nicht mehr aus, sich auf die sinnliche Attraktion von Aufführungen oder die Beiträge des Theaters zum kulturellen Leben zu berufen. Zunehmend wird vom Theater erwartet, konkrete gesellschaftliche Zwecke zu erfüllen, sich also explizit politisch oder sozial zu engagieren. Theaterpraktiker begeben sich in spezifisch abgegrenzte Kontexte wie soziale Brennpunkte, Therapiegruppen, Unternehmen oder Gefängnisse, um dort Transformationsprozesse einzuleiten und zu begleiten. Was aber bedeutet es, wenn Theater in dieser Weise zum Instrument politischer und sozialer Interventionen wird? Der Band erarbeitet eine Theorie performativer Interventionen, die mit der Praxis des internationalen Applied Theatre dominante, doch von der Theaterwissenschaft bisher wenig bedachte Spielarten einbezieht.
