Abstract:
Orthopaedic and microstructural studies on claw horn in fattening pigs in stalls of varying types The influence of different levels of floor moisture on development and health of the claw was studied in 16 fattening pigs during a period of 98 days. On “Stallit” floors, growth and abrasion of the claw‐horn were significantly higher than on straw. The higher net increase led to longer claws with more acute leading edge angles. The health of claw was better on straw than on “Stallit”, independently of the moisture of the surface. Sandcracks and splits of the claw‐horn appeared with both dry and moist “Stallit” housing significantly more often than with housing on a deep layer of straw. Erosions at the sole and bulb were more frequent with a moist straw layer. The histometric investigation showed the lowest number of tubes at the bulb‐horn. In the inner zones of the wall the surface area of medullary horn was positively correlated with the thickness of the tubes. The number of tubes and the percentage of medullary horn were diminished at the bulb with high floor moisture and high moisture content of the straw layer. The horn of the bulb had the highest water and ash content.
