Content: "A revelatory global history shows how cheap American grain toppled the world's largest empires To understand the rise and fall of empires, we must follow the paths traveled by grain-along rivers, between ports, and across seas. In Oceans of Grain, historian Scott Reynolds Nelson reveals how the struggle to dominate these routes transformed the balance of world power. Early in the nineteenth century, imperial Russia fed much of Europe through the booming port of Odessa. But following the US Civil War, tons of American wheat began to flood across the Atlantic, and food prices plummeted. This cheap foreign grain spurred the rise of Germany and Italy, the decline of the Habsburgs and the Ottomans, and the European scramble for empire. It was a crucial factor in the outbreak of the First World War and the Russian Revolution. A powerful new interpretation, Oceans of Grain shows that amid the great powers' rivalries, there was no greater power than control of grain"--

Content: "After watching the 2017 Charlottesville riots, Joan Wallach Scott began thinking about our standard views of history as progressive, and the culmination of progress in the Western European nation-state since the 18th century. The return of once-discredited ideas-Nazism, white supremacy, nationalism-poses serious threats to democratic institutions and values, and upends our commonly-used adages about "the judgment of history" or being "on the right side of history." The three chapters examine the Nuremberg Tribunal, South Africa's Truth and Reconciliation Commission, and the movement for reparations for slavery in the U.S. Scott examines how our association of these events with the expectation that history moves in an ever-improving linear direction. Instead, Scott forces us to reassess the history of these cases, not as an appeal to how history will ultimately judge these events, but rather as a need to perpetuate the nation-state and its claims to morality"--

Series Statement: Cambridge Companions to literature
Content: This Companion offers a capacious overview of American environmental literature and criticism. Tracing environmental literatures from the gates of the Manzanar War Relocation Camp in California to the island of St. Croix, from the notebooks of eighteenth-century naturalists to the practices of contemporary activists, this book offers readers a broad, multimedia definition of 'literature', a transnational, settler colonial comprehension of America, and a more-than-green definition of 'environment'. Demonstrating links between ecocriticism and such fields as Black feminism, food studies, decolonial activism, Latinx studies, Indigenous studies, queer theory, and carceral studies, the volume reveals the persistent relevance of literary methods within the increasingly interdisciplinary field of Environmental Humanities, while also modeling practices of literary reading shaped by this interdisciplinary turn. The result is a volume that will prove indispensable both to students seeking an overview of American environmental literature/criticism and to established scholars seeking new approaches to the field

Content: "Charles Schulz's Peanuts was an unexpectedly political comic strip. While many people have come to identify Charlie Brown, Linus, Lucy, Peppermint Patty, and Snoopy with childhood and innocence, Peanuts regularly commented on the politics and social turmoil of Cold War America. From nuclear testing to the Civil Rights Movement, from the Vietnam War to the feminist revolution, Peanuts was an unlikely medium for Americans of all stripes to debate the hopes and fears of the era. Charlie Brown's America is the story of how the creation of one midwestern man became one of the most influential pop culture properties of the twentieth century and what its popularity reveals about the character of the United States"--

Content: The Strategic Context of the Philippine-American War -- The United States Volunteer Force of 1899- -- The Moral Terrain of the U.S. Volunteers -- Pacification Operations in the Southern Philippines -- Tactics -- Losses -- Medical Care -- Garrison Life -- Internal Discipline -- External Discipline
Content: "The U.S. Volunteers who served in the Philippines from 1899 to 1901 enlisted fully understanding they would fight a colonial war. The Regular Army of 1899 had yet to recover from its Spanish War combat and disease losses, and their country needed an additional force to pacify the Philippines. Acting out of a sense of reflexively patriotic masculine obligation, and a profound belief in the self-evident superiority of American institutions, the USVs were tasked to impose their nation's will on a non-Western population, and they were willing to endure severe physical hardships and lethal risks in the service of that effort. Burden and Honor examines the combat and garrison life of volunteer soldiers on four islands in the Southern Philippines: Samar, Leyte, Panay, and Northern Mindanao, and their central role within a pacification strategy that combined military operations with martial law coercion to exhaust guerrilla bands and suppress elite support for continued resistance. Reed concludes that the success of the US counterinsurgency campaign was a result of a realistic pacification strategy implemented by sound operational decisions, the discipline and tactical skills of the US Volunteer force, and a vastly improved Army medical system."--
