Nicht erst in seinen Kriegsaufzeichnungen aus Paris (BS 1462) notiert Felix Hartlaub lakonisch, welche Deformationen des Lebens der Nationalsozialismus im Gefolge hatte. Bereits als Student in »Hitlers Berlin«, in den Jahren 1934 bis 1938, bildete er seine Meisterschaft darin aus, an unscheinbaren Szenen des täglichen Lebens aufzuzeigen, wie nichts mehr ist, wie es war. Seine literarischen Skizzen, zunächst nur für die Schublade gedacht, verdichten das Gesehene zu einer melancholischen Beschreibung der neuen Ordnungen, die das Leben der Hauptstadt überformen und erstarren lassen. Weniger melancholisch, vielmehr bissig geht Hartlaub seine Umgebung mit dem Zeichenstift an: Seine Zeichnungen – für den Freundeskreis und die Familie geschaffen – überspitzen, was sich ihm aufdrängt.
