    Abstract: Effect of sertraline, an antidepressant, on cytosolic free Ca 2+ levels ([Ca 2+ ] i ) in human cancer cells is unclear. This study examined if sertraline altered basal [Ca 2+ ] i levels in suspended OC2 human oral cancer by using fura-2 as a Ca 2+ -sensitive fluorescent probe. At concentrations of 10−100 μM, sertraline induced a [Ca 2+ ] i rise in a concentration-dependent fashion. The Ca 2+ signal was reduced partly by removing extracellular Ca 2+ indicating that Ca 2+ entry and release both contributed to the [Ca 2+ ] i rise. Sertraline induced Mn 2+ influx, leading to quench of fura-2 fluorescence suggesting Ca 2+ influx. This Ca 2+ influx was inhibited by suppression of phospholipase A2, inhibition of store-operated Ca 2+ channels or by modulation of protein kinase C activity. In Ca 2+ -free medium, pretreatment with the endoplasmic reticulum Ca 2+ pump inhibitor thapsigargin or 2,5-di-(t-butyl)-1,4-hydroquinone (BHQ) nearly abolished sertraline-induced Ca 2+ release. Conversely, pretreatment with sertraline greatly reduced the inhibitor-induced [Ca 2+ ] i rise, suggesting that sertraline released Ca 2+ from the endoplasmic reticulum. Inhibition of phospholipase C did not change sertraline-induced [Ca 2+ ] i rise. Together, in human oral cancer cells, sertraline induced [Ca 2+ ] i rises by causing phospholipase C-independent Ca 2+ release from the endoplasmic reticulum and Ca 2+ influx via store-operated Ca 2+ channels.

    Abstract: Background. Mirror therapy (MT) and mesh glove (MG) afferent stimulation may be effective in reducing motor impairment after stroke. A hybrid intervention of MT combined with MG (MT + MG) may broaden aspects of treatment benefits. Objective. To demonstrate the comparative effects of MG + MT, MT, and a control treatment (CT) on the outcomes of motor impairments, manual dexterity, ambulation function, motor control, and daily function. Methods. Forty-three chronic stroke patients with mild to moderate upper extremity impairment were randomly assigned to receive MT + MG, MT, or CT for 1.5 hours/day, 5 days/week for 4 weeks. Outcome measures were the Fugl-Meyer Assessment (FMA) and muscle tone measured by Myoton-3 for motor impairment and the Box and Block Test (BBT) and 10-Meter Walk Test (10 MWT) for motor function. Secondary outcomes included kinematic parameters for motor control and the Motor Activity Log and ABILHAND Questionnaire for daily function. Results. FMA total scores were significantly higher and synergistic shoulder abduction during reach was less in the MT + MG and MT groups compared with the CT group. Performance on the BBT and the 10 MWT (velocity and stride length in self-paced task and velocity in as-quickly-as-possible task) were improved after MT + MG compared with MT. Conclusions. MT + MG improved manual dexterity and ambulation. MT + MG and MT reduced motor impairment and synergistic shoulder abduction more than CT. Future studies may integrate functional task practice into treatments to enhance functional outcomes in patients with various levels of motor severity. The long-term effects of MG + MT remain to be evaluated.

    Abstract: We study the channel assignment strategy in multichannel wireless sensor networks (WSNs) where macrocells and sensor nodes are overlaid. The WSNs dynamically access the licensed spectrum owned by the macrocells to provide pervasive sensing services. We formulate the channel assignment problem as a potential game which has at least one pure strategy Nash equilibrium (NE). To achieve the NE, we propose a stochastic learning-based algorithm which does not require the information of other players’ actions and the time-varying channel. Cluster heads as players in the game act as self-organized learning automata and adjust assignment strategies based on their own action-reward history. The convergence property of the proposed algorithm toward pure strategy NE points is shown theoretically and verified numerically. Simulation results demonstrate that the learning algorithm yields a 26% sensor node capacity improvement as compared to the random selection, and incurs less than 10% capacity loss compared to the exhaustive search.

    Abstract: Recycled industrial feedstocks can improve a textile firm's balance sheet while reducing and recycling garbage. In this study, recycled polypropylene nonwoven selvage/metal (PPNS/M) complex-ply yarns served as the weft yarns of complex woven fabrics. The core yarn of each complex-ply yarn was recycled PPNS with an area mass of 30 g/m 2 . Stainless steel wires wrapped each core yarn. Three combinations of materials were tested; type A used core yarns with no metals; type B used core yarns with stainless steel reinforcement wires; type C used core yarns with both stainless steel and copper reinforcement wires. For the manufacturing process, the speed of the rotor twister was 8000 rpm and the wrap counts of the recycled PPNS/M complex-ply yarns were 0.5, 1.5, 2.5, 3.5, and 4.5 turns/cm. We fabricated the PPNS/M complex-ply yarns into PPNS/M complex woven fabrics. We performed maximum breaking strength and elongation testing: the complex-ply yarns wrapped at 2.5 turns/cm and reinforced with stainless steel wires and copper wires had a maximum breaking strength of 47.8 N and an elongation of 47.9%. Moreover, fabrics woven from those same yarns had a tensile strength of 637. 9 N and a tensile strain of 40.8%. Fabrics woven from yarns with a wrap count of 4.5 turns/cm and reinforced with stainless steel wires and copper wires showed an optimum air permeability of 80 cm 3 /cm 2 /s. The lowest surface resistivity found with the fabric specimen woven with type C yarns, which was 28.2 Ω/sq.

    Abstract: Background. Tools used to measure poststroke functional status must include basic and instrumental activities of daily living and reflect the patient’s and the clinician’s perspective of the disease and its effect on daily living performance. Objective. The authors combined the Functional Independence Measure (FIM) and the Nottingham Extended Activities of Daily Living (NEADL) to create a scale providing a comprehensive evaluation of ADLs functional status in patients with stroke. Methods. The study participants were 188 patients completing the FIM and the NEADL. The psychometric properties of the combined measure were examined with Rasch analysis. Results. A 3-point scale and a dichotomous scale were suggested for use in the FIM and the NEADL, respectively. The combined 40 items worked consistently to reflect a single construct, and “bladder management” and “bowel management” were highly related. After “bowel management” was removed from the combined scale, all but 3 items fit the model’s expectations, and the 39-item scale showed reasonable item difficulty hierarchy, with high reliability. The 3 misfit items were removed, and no differences in unidimensionality, differential item functioning, and reliability were found between the 36-item and 39-item scales. Conclusions. The combined measure of the FIM and the NEADL provides a comprehensive picture of ADLs. It extends the utility of the FIM and the NEADL and is recommended for use to measure the independence of patients after discharge home.

    Abstract: To evaluate the interactions of risk factors and identify their most powerful discrimination pathway for the occurrence of low back pain (LBP). Design. A cross-sectional study. Setting. Taiwan. Subjects. Taiwanese population of 30 to 64 years old. Measures. A self-reported question, “Have you experienced LBP within the last 3 months?” was used to evaluate LBP. The study variables included demographics (age, gender, occupation, education level, marital status, and household income), biometric health measures (bone mineral density and body mass index), dietary habits (weekly milk, coffee, tea, and soybean consumption), and other lifestyle factors (smoking habits, alcohol consumption, betel nut chewing, body weight control, exercise regularity, and stress management). Analysis. Logistic regression and classification tree analyses. Results. A total of 969 Taiwanese participants were analyzed. Primary logistic regression analysis identified three critical risk factors (gender, bone mineral density, and exercise regularity) for the occurrence of LBP. By classification tree analysis, demographic factors, dietary habits, and lifestyle factors had modifying effects on LBP. Conclusions. Various factors contribute to the risk of LBP. Interactions between risk factors should be considered when developing future strategies for the prevention and management of LBP.

    Abstract: To examine the effects of a Tai Chi Chung (TCC) program, an efficiency approach, on anxiety and cardiovascular risk factors. Design. A quasi-experimental study. Setting. A community in Taipei City, Taiwan. Subjects. One hundred thirty-three adults aged 55 years and older. Intervention. Sixty-four participants (experimental group) attended a 60-minute Tai Chi exercise three times per week for 12 weeks, whereas 69 participants (control group) maintained their usual daily activities. Measures. Anxiety states, systolic blood pressure (SBP), diastolic blood pressure (DBP), body mass index (BMI), and waist circumference (WC) were assessed at baseline, 6 weeks into the experiment, and 12 weeks into the experiment. Analysis. Generalized estimating equations were used to evaluate the changes. Results. Participants showed a greater drop in anxiety levels (β = −2.57, p = .001) and DBP (β = −7.02, p 〈 .001) at the 12-week follow-up than did the controls. SBP significantly decreased in the 6-week follow-up and 12-week follow-up tests. The participants in the intervention achieved a greater drop in BMI at the 6-week and 12-week follow-up visits than the controls. The interventions demonstrated decreased average WC at the 6-week and 12-week follow-up visits as compared to the controls. Conclusion. The results highlight the long-term benefits of a TCC program in facilitating health promotion by reducing anxiety and risk factors for cardiovascular diseases.

    Abstract: The semiconductivity of carbon nanotubes has been investigated by the luminescence measurement. The nanotubes were characterized by scanning electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction. Carbon nanotubes can luminesce under laser irradiation. Using the photoluminescence measurements the emission spectrum is very wide near the infrared emission range, with a major peak at 1.3 eV. According to the temperature dependence of the photoluminescence and the thermal photoluminescence experiments, the luminescence of carbon nanotubes comes from the center of the energy trap of a defect. In view of this result, it is suggested that the technique of thermal stimulated luminescence provides a simple alternative method to obtain the energy levels in carbon nanotubes systems.

    Abstract: This study was conducted to compare the therapeutic effects of health qigong (HQG) with conventional pulmonary rehabilitation (PR) exercise among patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). Methods A total of 132 patients with confirmed diagnosis of COPD but no serious comorbidities were randomly allocated to the HQG group (n = 51), PR group (n = 32), or medical treatment group (n = 35). The HQG group received 1 week of HQG training under the supervision of professional coaches, and were then encouraged to participate in a peer-led weekly practice group thrice a week, lasting 1 hour each time, for 6 months. The conventional PR group received the same amount of professional coaching on breathing and aerobic exercises, and peer-led walking or ball game groups. The medical treatment group only received health education on self-exercise. Baseline data were taken before randomization, and outcomes were ascertained at the 6-month follow-up by blinded assessors. Results Overall, 118 patients with complete data were recruited into the final analysis. Irrespective of disease stages, both HQG and PR groups showed improving trends across 6-minute walk test and quality of life scores, while the medical treatment group demonstrated either no improvements or some deteriorations. When comparing HQG with PR, HQG appeared to have better effects on decreasing the frequency of exacerbation for patients with GOLD (Global Initiative for Chronic Obstructive Lung Disease) stage I and maintaining a stable tumor necrosis factor-alpha level for patients of GOLD stage II. Conclusion This study solidifies the concept that both HQG and PR produce positive effects on subjective symptoms and functions among COPD patients, and also provided evidence that HQG can induce additional effects compared to conventional PR.

    Abstract: Ganoderma lucidum (G. lucidum) is a medicinal mushroom long used in Asia as a folk remedy to promote health and longevity. Recent studies indicate that G. lucidum activates NK cells, but the molecular mechanism underlying this effect has not been studied so far. To address this question, we prepared a water extract of G. lucidum and examined its effect on NK cells. We observed that G. lucidum treatment increases NK cell cytotoxicity by stimulating secretion of perforin and granulysin. The mechanism of activation involves an increased expression of NKG2D and natural cytotoxicity receptors (NCRs), as well as increased phosphorylation of intracellular MAPKs. Our results indicate that G. lucidum induces NK cell cytotoxicity against various cancer cell lines by activating NKG2D/NCR receptors and MAPK signaling pathways, which together culminate in exocytosis of perforin and granulysin. These observations provide a cellular and molecular mechanism to account for the reported anticancer effects of G. lucidum extracts in humans.
