Lennie und Georg sind zwei Landarbeiter, die quer durch Kalifornien wandern. Sie träumen von einem besseren Leben und wünschen sich eines Tages eine eigene Farm zu besitzen. Beide haben einen liebenswerten, gutmütigen Charakter, was andere, aber vor allem Lennie nicht glauben. Denn auf Grund seiner Riesenhände, seines Kindergemüts und seiner Kraft traut man ihm nicht. Wenn er mit seinen Pranken Mäuse oder Mädchen streichelt, wittern andere Gefahr. So ziehen die beiden Wanderarbeiter immer weiter. Eindringlich warnt Georg seinen Freund, er solle nichts und niemanden mehr streicheln, als sie auf der Curley-Farm endlich Arbeit finden. Zwar überwacht dort Farmer Curley die Männer, doch sein Misstrauen und seine Eifersucht können auch das Schlimmste nicht verhindern. Dazu kommt es, als sich die in ihrer Ehe unglückliche Miss Curley von Lennies Kräften angezogen fühlt. Hintergrundinformationen: Der bekannte Stoff von Nobelpreisträger John Steinbeck wurde mehrfach verfilmt, als Hörspiel bearbeitet und als Theaterstück inszeniert. Der Farbfilm war eine der teuersten Fernsehproduktionen der 1960er-Jahre, immerhin beliefen sich die Produktionskosten auf rund eine Million D-Mark. Gedreht wurde mit einem fast vierzigköpfigen Team in der französischen Camargue, die bestens für Kalifornien Parade stand. Das vorzügliche Agieren von Wolfgang Reichmann und Peer Schmidt in den Hauptrollen verschleiert die Tragödie, die sich im Vorfeld der Vorbereitungen zum Film abspielte: Hanns Lothar und Mario Adorf hätten Lennie und Georg spielen sollen. Lothar selbst hatte sich die Rolle und den Stoff bei Hädrich ausgesucht. Doch dann verstarb er während der Filmplanung, woraufhin sein Freund Mario Adorf die Rolle als Ehrerbietung gegenüber seinem Freund nicht spielte. (ARD)
