    Abstract: Superconducting pressed pellets of YBa2Cu3O7 (Tc=90 K), which were used as ablation targets for laser-induced vapor deposition of high Tc(85 K) superconducting thin films, have been analyzed by secondary electron microscopy, scanning Auger microscopy, energy dispersive x-ray analysis, and x-ray diffractometry. The elemental distribution of Y, Ba, and Cu appears reasonably uniform at depths corresponding to that probed by energy dispersive x-ray analysis (∼1 μm). However, scanning Auger microscopy analysis of the laser-impacted area shows a significant depletion of Cu and spatial redistribution of Y, Ba, Cu, and O on the target surface. X-ray diffractometry of the laser-impacted area shows the appearance of a new broad peak at a diffraction angle 2θ=29.7°, characteristic of BaY2O4 and a poorly defined peak at 2θ=29.3°, that can be attributed to BaCuO2. A possible influence of the laser-induced bulk superconductor compositional changes on the film composition is discussed in relation to recently reported experimental results on laser vapor deposition of high Tc films.

    Abstract: Measurements have been made of the solvation forces between mica surfaces in the even-numbered n-alkanes from hexane to hexadecane. In all cases the force law is qualitatively very similar, characterized by a decaying oscillatory function of distance, as occurs for simple isotropic liquids. The spacing between successive minima in the force does not increase with carbon number, and is comparable to the width of a linear alkane molecule rather than its length or any average diameter. This suggests that the alkanes have some tendency towards a parallel orientation near the mica surfaces. The measurements give no indication of any strong repulsive component expected from mean-field theories of higher alkanes or polymers. The results of one such theory are presented, and the reasons for its failure to match the experimental data are discussed.

    Abstract: Time-of-flight (TOF) measurements employing high-resolution multiphoton laser-induced fluorescence spectroscopy (LFS) have been used as a probe to determine the yield and velocity distributions of Zn atoms ejected from a ZnS single crystal under irradiation by 308-nm photons. For fluences between 20 and 80 mJ/cm2 (irradiated area 2 mm2), the velocity distributions could be fitted by Maxwell–Boltzmann distributions where the characteristic temperature increased from 2000 to 9000 K, respectively. The absolute neutral Zn yield also increased from 108 to 1012 atoms per pulse over this same fluence range. Plots of temperature (T) as a function of fluence (F) and yield as a function of 1/T and 1/F suggest thermal evaporation as the mechanism for the Zn emission.The results indicate that with increasing fluence a critical combination of particle density and laser intensity is reached for formation of a plasma which interacts with the surface to cause catastrophic failure. For consecutive laser shots at constant ablation laser fluences, a nearly exponential increase of the Zn particle density was observed, although the measured kinetic temperature remains approximately constant even beyond the onset of visible damage to the ZnS surface. Doppler-shift techniques have been combined with TOF measurements for the first time in order to separate prompt from delayed emission of ablated atoms as well as to probe possible molecular or cluster ejection and fragmentation. Evidence for the latter phenomena was obtained.

    Abstract: The use of picosecond, Q-switched lasers and advanced polarization schemes has led to the development of a coherent Raman technique with the sensitivity of coherent anti-Stokes Raman spectroscopy experiments but without the troublesome phase-matching requirements. Experiments in dilute solutions of benzene indicate a limit of sensitivity for the current apparatus of 2.5×10−4 M in two minutes of signal averaging over 150 cm−1. Possible applications to the in situ study of passive films and thin films on transparent media are discussed.
