    Abstract: This study aimed to analyze the association between the activity of daily living (ADL), coronavirus disease (COVID-19), and the value of the Barthel Index in predicting the prognosis of patients. Methods This study included 398 patients with COVID-19, whose ADL at admission to hospital were assessed with the Barthel Index. The relationship between the index and the mortality risk of the patients was analyzed. Several regression models and a decision tree were established to evaluate the prognostic value of the index in COVID-19 patients. Results The Barthel Index scores of deceased patients were significantly lower than that of discharged patients (median: 65 vs. 90, P & lt; 0.001), and its decrease indicated an increased risk of mortality in patients ( P & lt; 0.001). After adjusting models for age, gender, temperature, pulse, respiratory rate, mean arterial pressure, oxygen saturation, etc., the Barthel Index could still independently predict prognosis (OR = 0.809; 95% CI: 0.750–0.872). The decision tree showed that patients with a Barthel Index of below 70 had a higher mortality rate (33.3–40.0%), while those above 90 were usually discharged (mortality: 2.7–7.2%). Conclusion The Barthel Index is of prognostic value for mortality in COVID-19 patients. According to their Barthel Index, COVID-19 patients can be divided into emergency, observation, and normal groups (0–70; 70–90; 90–100), with different treatment strategies.

    Abstract: Whether wedge resection or stereotactic body radiation therapy (SBRT) has better effectiveness in treatment of clinical stage I non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) patients remains unclear. Here we conducted the first meta-analysis to directly compare the survival outcomes of clinical stage I NSCLCs treated with wedge resection and SBRT. Methods We systematically searched studies from PubMed, Embase, and Corchrane Library up to October 1, 2021. Data for analysis mainly included overall survival (OS) and disease-free survival (DFS), which were obtained directly from the text results or calculated from the Kaplan–Meier survival curve. We used the standard random-effect model test (DerSimonian and Laird method) to analyze the pooled hazard ratios (HRs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs). The Q -test and I 2 -test were used to assess heterogeneity. The stability of pooled HRs was examined by sensitivity analysis. Results Six retrospective studies with a total of 11,813 clinical stage I NSCLCs who received wedge resection or SBRT were included. The results showed that patients receiving wedge resection had a significantly better OS (HR = 1.20, 95% CI = [1.07, 1.34], P = 0.002) than those with SBRT, but no significant difference of DFS (HR 1.53, 95% CI = [0.83–2.83], P = 0.17) was observed. There was no significant heterogeneity during our analysis, but there may be potential publication bias among these studies. Conclusions Our meta-analysis showed that clinical stage I NSCLCs treated with wedge resection had superior OS than those treated with SBRT. However, more prospective clinical trials should be well-designed to evaluate the optimal treatment modality of early-stage NSCLCs.

    Abstract: Frailty is a difficult-to-measure condition that is susceptible to adverse outcomes. The Japan Frailty Scale (JFS) is a tool for assessing frailty status in older adults. This study aimed to translate and culturally adapt the JFS into a Chinese version (JFS-C). Materials and methods The study included 160 older adults as participants. Internal consistency was assessed using Cronbach’s alpha, and test–retest reliability was conducted using the intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC). Convergent validity was evaluated by assessing the correlation between JFS-C and the Barthel Index, the Frail scale, and the 36-item Short-Form Health Survey (SF-36). Criterion validity was assessed by comparing JFS-C scores with the Frail scale. Results JFS-C demonstrated adequate internal consistency (Cronbach’s alphas = 0.711) and excellent test–retest reliability over a 7 to 10-day interval (ICC = 0.949). Correlation analysis showed a strong positive correlation between JFS-C and the Frail scale ( r  = 0.786, p   & lt; 0.001), a moderate negative correlation with the Barthel Index ( r  = −0.598, p   & lt; 0.001), and moderate correlations with various subscales of SF-36 ( r  = −0.574 to −0.661). However, no significant correlations were found between JFS-C and SF-36 mental health ( r  = −0.363, p   & lt; 0.001) or role emotional ( r  = −0.350, p   & lt; 0.001). Based on the reference standard of the Frail scale phenotype (score ≥ 2), the cutoff value for JFS-C was determined to be 3. Conclusion JFS-C demonstrates good reliability and validity in assessing frailty among the older population in China.

    Abstract: The tooth arrangements of human beings are challenging to accurately observe when relying on dentists’ naked eyes, especially for dental caries in children, which is difficult to detect. Cone-beam computer tomography (CBCT) is used as an auxiliary method to measure patients’ teeth, including children. However, subjective and irreproducible manual measurements are required during this process, which wastes much time and energy for the dentists. Therefore, a fast and accurate tooth segmentation algorithm that can replace repeated calculations and annotations in manual segmentation has tremendous clinical significance. This study proposes a local contextual enhancement model for clinical dental CBCT images. The local enhancement model, which is more suitable for dental CBCT images, is proposed based on the analysis of the existing contextual models. Then, the local enhancement model is fused into an encoder–decoder framework for dental CBCT images. At last, extensive experiments are conducted to validate our method.

    Abstract: This study proposes a novel voltage source converter (VSC)-based voltage dynamic regulatory device based on energy storage and virtual synchronous control, called as a rotating inertia and voltage stiffness compensator (RIVSC), to enhance grid voltage dynamics. In the proposed RIVSC, there is no inner cascaded current control, and the output voltage of the VSC, i.e., inner potential, is directly connected to the grid via a filter. Stiffness characteristic is featured in the inner potential of the RIVSC by the virtual synchronous control. On the basis of the stiffness characteristic, the RIVSC can naturally provide dynamic support for grid voltage. Compared to the traditional synchronous condenser, the proposed RIVSC is more flexible and contributes less short-circuit current. Compared to the existing power electronic-interfaced voltage regulatory device, dynamic support is natural without any time delay, and the proposed RIVSC can improve the dynamic performance of the grid voltage, which is helpful to alleviate the temporary overvoltage at the sending terminal. The basic principle, control methods, and application analysis are presented. Meanwhile, a 10 kW prototype is set up, and the experiment results validate the feasibility and effectiveness of the proposed RIVSC on improving grid voltage dynamics.

    Abstract: The in situ post-translational modification (PTM) crosstalk refers to the interactions between different types of PTMs that occur on the same residue site of a protein. The crosstalk sites generally have different characteristics from those with the single PTM type. Studies targeting the latter’s features have been widely conducted, while studies on the former’s characteristics are rare. For example, the characteristics of serine phosphorylation (pS) and serine ADP-ribosylation (SADPr) have been investigated, whereas those of their in situ crosstalks (pSADPr) are unknown. In this study, we collected 3,250 human pSADPr, 7,520 SADPr, 151,227 pS and 80,096 unmodified serine sites and explored the features of the pSADPr sites. We found that the characteristics of pSADPr sites are more similar to those of SADPr compared to pS or unmodified serine sites. Moreover, the crosstalk sites are likely to be phosphorylated by some kinase families (e.g., AGC, CAMK, STE and TKL) rather than others (e.g., CK1 and CMGC). Additionally, we constructed three classifiers to predict pSADPr sites from the pS dataset, the SADPr dataset and the protein sequences separately. We built and evaluated five deep-learning classifiers in ten-fold cross-validation and independent test datasets. We also used the classifiers as base classifiers to develop a few stacking-based ensemble classifiers to improve performance. The best classifiers had the AUC values of 0.700, 0.914 and 0.954 for recognizing pSADPr sites from the SADPr, pS and unmodified serine sites, respectively. The lowest prediction accuracy was achieved by separating pSADPr and SADPr sites, which is consistent with the observation that pSADPr’s characteristics are more similar to those of SADPr than the rest. Finally, we developed an online tool for extensively predicting human pSADPr sites based on the CNN OH classifier, dubbed EdeepSADPr. It is freely available through http://edeepsadpr.bioinfogo.org/ . We expect our investigation will promote a comprehensive understanding of crosstalks.

    Abstract: This study aimed to comprehensively summarize the knowledge structure and research hotspots of ophthalmology in the field of neuroscience through bibliometric and visual analysis. Methods We searched the Web of Science Core Collection database for articles from 2002 to 2021 related to ophthalmology in the field of neuroscience. Using VOSviewer and CiteSpace, bibliometric analysis was conducted on the number of annual ophthalmology publications, authors, organizations, countries, journals, cited references, keywords, and burst keywords. Results A total of 9,179 articles were published from 34,073 authors, 4,987 organizations, and 87 countries. The cited references in these articles were published in 23,054 journals. Moreover, there were 30,864 keywords among the 9,179 articles. Notably, scholars have increasingly begun paying attention to ophthalmology in the field of neuroscience in the past 20 years. Claudio Babiloni published the most articles. The University of Washington had the greatest number of articles. The United States, Germany, and England led in the number of articles published. The Journal of Neuroscience was the most cited. The article with the highest outbreak intensity was an article published by Maurizio Corbetta in Nature Reviews Neuroscience in 2002 entitled “Control of goal-directed and stimulus-driven attention in the brain.” The most important keyword was the brain, and the top burst keyword was functional connectivity. Conclusion This study visualized ophthalmology research in the field of neuroscience through bibliometric analysis and predicted potential research trends in future to help clinicians and basic researchers provide diversified perspectives and further carry out in-depth research on ophthalmology.

    Abstract: The aim of this study is to analyze the characteristics of inedible airway foreign bodies in pediatric rigid bronchoscopy to facilitate the improvement of management and technology. This retrospective analytical study was performed from January 2017 to June 2020. All admissions of pediatric patients (age & lt;18 years) with foreign-body aspiration diagnosis codes ([ICD]-10:T17 300, T17 400, T17 500 and T17 900) and procedure codes (33.7801) were extracted. Age, sex, preoperative history and imaging data, surgical records, length of hospital stay, reoperations and postoperative complications were included. Data were analyzed with SPSS 20. A total of 1237 patients were hospitalized and underwent rigid bronchoscopy. Forty-five (3.6%) patients with inedible foreign bodies in the airway were confirmed. There were no significant differences in sex, time of onset and length of hospital stay between the inedible and edible foreign body groups, except for age and a definite history of foreign body aspiration ( P = 0.000). Coughing, wheezing and fever were the common clinical symptoms in all patients. The following were the common locations of inedible foreign bodies: right bronchus (22/45), left bronchus (18/45), trachea (3/45) and larynx (2/45). The most frequent inedible foreign bodies were parts of a pen (15/45), a light-emitting diode (7/45) and plastic parts of toys (6/45). Vocal cord injury and a laryngeal web were observed in one case each. Conclusion Rigid bronchoscopy is the method of choice for the removal of inedible foreign bodies. Adequate preoperative assessment to rely on CT scans, skillful operation techniques to avoid damaging and active management of postoperative complications are important for the success of the procedure.
