    Abstract: Trigeminal neuralgia is a neurological disease. It is often treated by puncturing the trigeminal nerve through the skin and the oval foramen of the skull to selectively destroy the pain nerve. The process of puncture operation is difficult because the morphology of the foramen ovale in the skull base is varied and the surrounding anatomical structure is complex. Computer-aided puncture guidance technology is extremely valuable for the treatment of trigeminal neuralgia. Computer-aided guidance can help doctors determine the puncture target by accurately locating the foramen ovale in the skull base. Foramen ovale segmentation is a prerequisite for locating but is a tedious and error-prone task if done manually. In this paper, we present an image segmentation solution based on the multiatlas method that automatically segments the foramen ovale. We developed a data set of 30 CT scans containing 20 foramen ovale atlas and 10 CT scans for testing. Our approach can perform foramen ovale segmentation in puncture operation scenarios based solely on limited data. We propose to utilize this method as an enabler in clinical work.

    Abstract: Objective. The randomized controlled clinical trial aims to investigate the clinical efficacy of moxibustion for breast cancer patients with chemotherapy-induced myelosuppression (CIM) during adjuvant chemotherapy. Methods. Surgically resected breast cancer patients were randomly divided into the moxibustion group (MOX; n = 48) and control group (CON; n = 44). Routine adjuvant chemotherapy (every 21 days, 4–8 cycles) and supportive recombinant human granulocyte colony-stimulating factor were given to both groups, while MOX received an additional moxibustion treatment (once daily after each cycle of chemotherapy). Primary endpoints included the grade of myelosuppression in terms of white blood cell (WBC) and absolute neutrophil count (ANC) and the incidence of myelosuppression-related serious adverse events (SAEs). Other measures included treatment compliance, adverse events (AEs), and survival. Results. WBC counts were generally higher in MOX and were dramatically higher than those in CON at the 7th course of chemotherapy ( P = 0.008 ), while grade 1 ANC reduction was dramatically lower than that in CON at the 7thcourse of chemotherapy ( P = 0.006 ). These effects were particularly significant in patients receiving anthracycline-taxane combination regimens. Moreover, MOX had fewer febrile neutropenia than CON ( P = 0.051 ). MOX demonstrated a lower incidence of grade 3–4 myelosuppression ( P 〈 0.05 ). AEs including grade 2–3 severe nausea, various kinds of pains, and vertigo occurred less frequently in MOX ( P 〈 0.05 ). No difference in survival was observed between the two groups ( P 〉 0.05 ). Conclusion. Moxibustion is effective for treating CIM in breast cancer patients during adjuvant chemotherapy, especially for patients receiving high-dose, long-term, and combined chemotherapy regimens. Moxibustion can reduce the incidence of myelosuppression-related SAE and improve the compliance and safety of chemotherapy in breast cancer.

    Abstract: Seed filling rate of soybean has been shown to be a dynamic process in different developmental stages affected by both genotype and environment. The objective of the present study was to determine additive, epistatic and quantitative trait loci (QTLs)×environment interaction (QE) effects of the QTL underlying a seed filling rate of soybean. One hundred and forty-three recombinant inbred lines (RILs) derived from the cross of Charleston and Dongnong 594 were used with 2 years of field data (2004 and 2005). Eleven QTLs with significantly unconditional and conditional additive ( a ) effect and/or additive×environment interaction ( ae ) effect at different filling stages were identified. Of them six QTLs showed positive a effects and four QTLs had negative a effects on the seed filling rate during seed development. aa and aae effects of 12 pairs of QTLs were identified by unconditional mapping from the initial stage to the final stage. Thirteen pairs of QTLs underlying the seed filling rate with aa and aae effects were identified by conditional mapping. QTLs with aa and aae (additive×additive×environment) effects appeared to vary at different filling stages. Our results demonstrated that the mass filling rate in soybean seed were under genetic and environmental control.

    Abstract: Objective. To examine whether comorbidity with type 2 diabetes (T2D) affects the clinical and hematological parameters of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) patients. Methods. We retrospectively investigated the clinical, imaging, and laboratory characteristics of patients with confirmed COVID-19 who were hospitalized from January 30, 2020 to March 17, 2020, at the Renmin Hospital of Wuhan University. A detailed clinical record was kept for each subject, including the medical history of COVID-19 and physical and laboratory examinations. A total of 164 subjects were eligible for the study, among which 40 patients were comorbid with T2D. Further analysis was conducted in two subcohorts of sex- and age-matched patients with and without T2D to identify hematological and biochemical differences. The laboratory tests, including routine blood tests, serum biochemistry, and coagulation function, were performed upon admission. Results. The two groups showed no significant differences in baseline parameters, including age, sex, chest X-ray, or computed tomography (CT) findings, upon admission. However, patients with T2D showed an increased incidence of diarrhea. T2D patients required more recovery time from pneumonia, as shown by follow-up CT findings, which might contribute to the prolonged hospitalization. Comorbidity with T2D also increased risk of secondary bacterial infection during COVID-19. The T2D group had significantly higher white blood cell and neutrophil counts compared with the nondiabetic group, but T2D patients suffered from more severe lymphocytopenia and inflammation ( P 〈 0.05 ). Most biochemical parameters showed no significant differences between the two groups ( P 〉 0.05 ). However, patients with T2D seemed to have a significantly higher risk of developing hyperlactatemia, hyponatremia, and hypocalcemia. Conclusions. COVID-19 patients comorbid with T2D demonstrated distinguishing clinical features and hematological parameters during the infection. It is necessary to develop a different clinical severity scoring system for COVID-19 patients with T2D. This study may provide helpful clues for the assessment and management of COVID-19 in T2D patients.

    Abstract: This study aimed to culture and characterize mesenchymal stem cells derived from meniscal debris. Cells in meniscal debris from patients with meniscal injury were isolated by enzymatic digestion, cultured in vitro to the third passage, and analyzed by light microscopy to observe morphology and growth. Third-passage cultures were also analyzed for immunophenotype and ability to differentiate into osteogenic, adipogenic, and chondrogenic lineages. After 4-5 days in culture, cells showed a long fusiform shape and adhered to the plastic walls. After 10–12 days, cell clusters and colonies were observed. Third-passage cells showed uniform morphology and good proliferation. They expressed CD44, CD90, and CD105 but were negative for CD34 and CD45. Cultures induced to differentiate via osteogenesis became positive for Alizarin Red staining as well as alkaline phosphatase activity. Cultures induced to undergo adipogenesis were positive for Oil Red O staining. Cultures induced to undergo chondrogenesis were positive for staining with Toluidine Blue, Alcian Blue, and type II collagen immunohistochemistry, indicating cartilage-specific matrix. These results indicate that the cells we cultured from meniscal debris are mesenchymal stem cells capable of differentiating along three lineages. These stem cells may be valuable source for meniscal regeneration.

    Abstract: Introduction. Cholinergic mechanisms play an important role in the control of hormonal and vascular regulation. However, in utero development of cholinergic regulation in the foetal hormonal systems is not clearly understood.This study investigated foetal hormonal and cardiovascular responses following application of the muscarinic antagonist atropine. Materials and methods. Chronically prepared near-term ovine foetuses (control and experimental: n=5, each group) were used.After 4—5 days’ surgical recovery, conscious ewes and their foetuses were tested in vivo. Results. In response to intravenous atropine, foetal systolic, diastolic, and mean arterial pressure, as well as heart rate, increased immediately. Inhibition of muscarinic systems in the circulation caused a reduction of plasma angiotensin II levels, while angiotensin I in the circulation remained unchanged in the foetus. In addition, foetal plasma aldosterone levels were significantly increased following blockade of the cholinergic receptor, while other hormones, including arginine vasopressin, adrenocorticotrophic hormone, and atrial natriuretic peptide, were not changed in foetal blood under the same condition. Conclusions. The results suggest that foetal automatic systems, not those hormonal factors tested, play a major role in cholinergic mechanisms mediating cardiovascular control. Furthermore, the data provide new information on how muscarinic inhibition affects renin-angiotensin system and adrenal cortex functions.     Abstract: Background. The purpose of this study is to explore the correlation between the 18F-FDG PET/CT imaging maximum standardized uptake value (SUVmax) of preoperative colon cancer primary lesions and clinicopathological factors. Methods. 88 colon cancer patients diagnosed by histopathology were collected from January 2014 to December 2015. 18F-FDG PET/CT imaging was performed before surgery. Kaplan–Meier survival analysis was used to assess the prognosis of colon cancer patients. Results. The 18F-FDG PET/CT imaging SUVmax value of preoperative colon cancer primary lesion was significantly correlated with the length of the lesion, clinical stage, histopathological type, and the degree of tumor differentiation. The SUVmax value of tumors with long-diameter, ≥ 3 cm, clinically high-stage, adenocarcinoma, and poorly differentiated lesions was significantly high. In addition, the consistency between PET/CT and surgical pathological results at stage I and IV was higher. Stage II and III PET/CT are basically consistent with the pathological results of surgery. Kaplan–Meier survival analysis showed that the 5-year event-free survival rate of the SUVmax  〉  18.26 group was significantly lower than that of the SUVmax ≤ 18.26 group. Conclusion. 18F-FDG PET/CT imaging SUVmax of preoperative colon cancer primary lesions can not only reflect the proliferation and invasion ability but also monitor the recurrence and metastasis of colon cancer.

    Abstract: Doxorubicin (DOX), the anthracycline chemotherapeutic agent, is widely used for the treatment of various cancers. However, its clinical application is compromised by dose-dependent and fatal cardiotoxicity. This study is aimed at investigating the cardioprotective effects of Qishen granule (QSG) and the specific mechanism by which QSG alleviates DOX-induced cardiotoxicity (DIC) and providing an alternative for the treatment of DIC. We first evaluated the cardioprotective effects of QSG in a DIC mouse model, and the obtained results showed that QSG significantly protected against DOX-induced myocardial structural and functional damage, mitochondrial oxidative damage, and apoptosis. Subsequently, after a comprehensive understanding of the specific roles and recent developments of p53-mediated mitochondrial quality control mechanisms in DIC, we investigated whether QSG acted on MDM2 to regulate the activity of p53 and downstream mitophagy and mitochondrial biogenesis. The in vivo results showed that DOX inhibited mitochondrial biogenesis and blocked mitophagy in the mouse myocardium, while QSG reversed these effects. Mechanistically, we combined nutlin-3, which inhibits the binding of p53 and MDM2, with DOX and QSG and evaluated their influence on mitophagy and mitochondrial biogenesis in H9C2 cardiomyocytes. The obtained results showed that both DOX and nutlin-3 substantially inhibited mitophagy and mitochondrial biogenesis and induced mitochondrial oxidative damage and apoptosis, which could be partially recovered by QSG. Importantly, the immunoprecipitation results showed that QSG promoted the binding of MDM2 to p53, thus decreasing the level of p53 protein and the binding of p53 to Parkin. Collectively, QSG could promote the degradation of p53 by enhancing the binding of MDM2 to the p53 protein, resulting in the reduced binding of p53 to the Parkin protein, thus improving Parkin-mediated mitophagy. Increased degradation of p53 protein by QSG simultaneously enhanced mitochondrial biogenesis mediated by PGC-1α. Ultimately, QSG relieved DOX-induced mitochondrial oxidative damage and apoptosis by coordinating mitophagy and mitochondrial biogenesis.

    Abstract: Red clay is a special soil layer with complex engineering properties distributed in tropical and subtropical regions. An anchor cable support is a common form of red clay slope support. The effectiveness of the anchor cable support is mainly determined by the anchoring force provided by the red clay stratum. Increase of the water content will lead to the rapid deterioration of the mechanical properties of red clay, which will lead to the reduction of the anchoring force of the slope anchor cable and lead to the failure of the support. Based on the classical Phillips and uniform anchorage shear stress distribution theory, this paper puts forward a uniform-exponential distribution pattern of anchorage shear stress according to the specific characteristics of red clay by using the characteristics of the peak shear strength and residual shear strength of the rock and soil mass. With increasing anchorage force, the dynamic evolution (single exponential distribution ⟶ double single exponential distribution ⟶ uniform index exponential complex distribution ⟶ uniform distribution) of the anchorage shear stress is analysed. Based on the peak and residual test of the cohesive force and internal friction angle, the relationship between the anchoring force and buried depth and water content is established by analysing the factors influencing the anchoring force. It can be found from the field test that, according to the relationship established, the limit anchorage force of the anchor cable in the red clay stratum can be calculated and the water sensitivity of the anchor cable’s limit anchorage force can be quantitatively analysed.
