    Abstract: Chrysanthemum, one of the most popular ornamental plants in the world, is renowned for its brilliant colors and multifarious flower types. Thousands of gorgeous chrysanthemum cultivars exist thanks to both traditional breeding techniques and its characteristic bud sporting. In this study, we identified a pink-to-yellow flower color-changed bud sport of the edible chrysanthemum cultivar ‘Pink Candy’. The bud variant and its parent plant bloomed at the same time, but with yellow- and pink-colored flowers, respectively. However, the two flower types exhibited strikingly different combinations and concentrations of primary and secondary metabolites, aromatic compounds, and pigments. Additionally, the expression patterns of key pigment biosynthesis genes, such as CmPAL (phenylalanineammonialyase), CmDFR (dihydroflavonol 4-reductase), CmF3H (flavanone 3′-hydroxylase), CmNXS (neoxanthin synthase) and CmCCD4 (carotenoid cleavage dioxygenase 4) were distinct between both flower types, helping to explain the color transformation of the mutant to some extent. Taken together, our results suggest a mechanism explaining the transformation of pink flowers to yellow flowers in the mutant bud sport. These results provide the foundation for the production of a novel chrysanthemum cultivar.

    Abstract: Background: In the context of increasing doctor–patient tensions in China, the objective of this study was to explore and examine the effects of loving-kindness meditation (LKM) on doctors’ mindfulness, empathy, and communication skills. Methods: A total of 106 doctors were recruited from a hospital in China, and randomly divided into an LKM training group (n = 53) and waiting control group (n = 53). The LKM training group received 8 weeks of LKM training intervention, whereas the control group received no intervention. Three major variables (mindfulness, empathy, and communication skills) were measured before (pre-test) and after (post-test) the LKM training intervention. Results: The empathy and communication skills of the LKM group were significantly improved compared with those of the control group, but the level of mindfulness did not significantly change. Conclusions: The results suggested that LKM may contribute to improving physicians’ empathy and communication skills. However, the mechanisms that underlie the effects of the LKM on mindfulness, empathy, and communication skills and other psychological constructs needs further elucidation.

    Abstract: Detrital ilmenite and its altered minerals are common in sandstone-hosted U deposits in the northern Ordos Basin, north China. Petrographic observation, SEM-EDS, EMPA, and LA-MC-ICP-MS were utilized to characterize the spatial relationship between altered ilmenite and the U minerals, and to investigate the U enrichment mechanism and alteration processes of ilmenite. Ilmenite was completely or partially altered to leucoxene and anatase along its rim and crack in ore-bearing sandstone. Framboidal and cement pyrite of BSR and TSR origin were identified around altered ilmenite. Two U phases closely related to altered ilmenite contain Ti-coffinite (I) and coffinite (II). These data indicate that ilmenite alteration and the associated processes of U enrichment can be divided into two stages. Stage one involves U pre-enrichment and adsorption, with stage two involving U enrichment via TiO2 (leucoxene and anatase) catalytic reduction. Ilmenite was altered into porous leucoxene that can adsorb U as uraniferous leucoxene and Ti-coffinite (I) and framboidal pyrite directly by reactions with H2S, produced by sulfate-reducing bacteria during synsedimentary and early diagenesis stages. Altered ilmenite can enrich U in the form of coffinite (II) through a catalytic reduction reaction which is triggered by β and γ radiation produced by previously adsorbed U during the uplift of ore-bearing bed in the Late Cretaceous period. In addition, cement pyrite can also reduce U6+ into U4+ which deposits on its surface in the form of coffinite (II). These results demonstrate a new mechanism, mediated by adsorption and catalytic reduction, to enrich U in sandstone-hosted U deposits.

    Abstract: The follicular microenvironment, including intra-follicular granulosa cells (GCs), is responsible for oocyte maturation and subsequent ovulation. However, the functions of GCs and cellular components of the follicular microenvironment in preovulatory follicles have not been extensively explored. Here, we surveyed the single-cell transcriptome of the follicular microenvironment around MII oocytes in six human preovulatory follicles in in vitro fertilization. There were six different cell types in the preovulatory follicles, including GCs and various immune cells. In GCs, we identified nine different functional clusters with different functional transcriptomic profiles, including specific clusters involved in inflammatory responses and adhesive function. Follicular macrophages are involved in immune responses, extracellular matrix remoulding and assist GCs in promoting the oocyte meiotic resumption. Interestingly, we observed that the specific terminal state subcluster of GCs with high levels of adhesive-related molecules should result in macrophage recruitment and residence, further contributing to an obvious heterogeneity of the immune cell proportion in preovulatory follicles from different patients. Our results provide a comprehensive understanding of the transcriptomic landscape of the preovulatory follicular microenvironment at the single-cell level. It provides valuable insights into understanding the regulation of the oocyte maturation and ovulation process, offering potential clues for the diagnosis and treatment of oocyte-maturation-related and ovulation-related diseases.

    Abstract: Concerns about the impact of space radiation on spacecraft and their internal instruments have prompted the need for effective protection. However, excessive protection can increase the costs and difficulty of space launches, making it crucial to achieve better shielding protection of lighter weights. In real space orbits, we observed the interference of charged particles on photon-counting imaging detectors and plan to address this issue by adding a shielding ring to the side wall of the detector input terminal. Additionally, a local protection structure was proposed for electronics, where the outer edge was increased to enable particles to reach the same thickness as the shielding box within the PCB range. This approach resulted in an omnidirectional spatial shielding thickness that was nearly identical at any point on the PCB surface. Furthermore, we used the Monte Carlo method to calculate the energy loss of electrons and protons in materials such as aluminum (Al), tantalum (Ta), and high-density polyethylene (HDPE). Through this analysis, we determined the optimal mass ratio of Al, Ta, and HDPE to achieve the lowest ionization doses at an object’s location in the particle environment of the FY-3 satellite orbit. This protection strategy provides a useful design concept for photoelectric detection instruments with high sensitivity.

    Abstract: Gac fruit (Momordica cochinchinensis Spreng) is a popular tropical fruit in southeast Asia. What is amazing is that its seeds (Momordicae Semen) and arils are traditional herbs with anti-tumor activity, and have protected human health for more than 1000 years. In recent years, its anti-tumor activity has received extensive attention and research. This manuscript summarized the chemical composition of saponins, fatty acids, volatile constituents, proteins, peptides, and other components from Momordicae Semen (MSE). The effect and mechanism of MSE and its extract on breast cancer, gastric cancer, lung cancer, esophagus cancer, melanomas, and human cervical epithelial carcinoma were discussed. In addition, its antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and other pharmacological effects were also analyzed. We hope that this review will provide new ideas for the treatment of cancer and other diseases, and become a reference for the further research into complementary and alternative medicine.

    Abstract: Seven new polyketides named fusarisolins F-K (1–6) and fusarin I (7) were isolated from the marine-derived fungus Fusarium solani 8388, together with the known anhydrojavanicin (8), 5-deoxybostry coidin (9), and scytalol A (10). Their structures were established by comprehensive spectroscopic data analyses, and by comparison of the 1H and 13C NMR data with those reported in literature. Fusarisolin F (1) contained both a dichlorobenzene group and an ethylene oxide unit, which was rare in nature. In the bioassays, fusarisolin I (4), fusarisolin J (5), and 5-deoxybostry coidin (9) exhibited obvious antibacterial activities against methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus n315 with MIC values of 3, 3, and 6 μg/mL, respectively. Fusarisolin H (3) and fusarisolin J (5) showed inhibitory effects against methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus NCTC 10442 with the same MIC value of 6 μg/mL. With the exception of 5, all other compounds did not show or showed weak cytotoxicities against HeLa, A549, and KB cells; while fusarisolin J (5) demonstrated moderate cytotoxicities against the three human cancer cell lines with CC50 values between 9.21 and 14.02 μM.

    Abstract: The enoki mushroom (Flammulina filiformis) is one of the most important and popular edible mushrooms commercially in China. However, traditional mushroom cultivar identification is challenging due to poor accuracy, heavy workloads, and low reproducibility. To overcome this challenge, we developed a method for identifying F. filiformis strains using multiple nucleotide polymorphism sequencing (MNP-seq). This involved screening 179 universal MNP markers based on whole-genome sequencing data, constructing an MNP sequence library, and performing multiplex PCR amplification and high-sequencing. We further screened 69 core MNP markers and used them to build a neighbor-joining (NJ) phylogenetic tree of 232 cultivated and wild strains. Our analysis showed that all cultivars could be accurately separated by computing genetic similarity values and that the cultivars could be separated into 22 distinct evolutionary pedigrees. The specific value of genetic similarity can be used as the standard to distinguish F. filiformis cultivars, however, it needs to be comprehensively defined by the additional phenotype and biological characteristics of those strains in the future work.

    Abstract: For the treatment of diseases, especially chronic diseases, traditional natural drugs have more effective therapeutic advantages because of their multi-target and multi-channel characteristics. Among many traditional natural medicines, resins frankincense and myrrh have been proven to be effective in the treatment of inflammation and cancer. In the West, frankincense and myrrh have been used as incense in religious and cultural ceremonies since ancient times; in traditional Chinese and Ayurvedic medicine, they are used mainly for the treatment of chronic diseases. The main chemical constituents of frankincense and myrrh are terpenoids and essential oils. Their common pharmacological effects are anti-inflammatory and anticancer. More interestingly, in traditional Chinese medicine, frankincense and myrrh have been combined as drug pairs in the same prescription for thousands of years, and their combination has a better therapeutic effect on diseases than a single drug. After the combination of frankincense and myrrh forms a blend, a series of changes take place in their chemical composition, such as the increase or decrease of the main active ingredients, the disappearance of native chemical components, and the emergence of new chemical components. At the same time, the pharmacological effects of the combination seem magically powerful, such as synergistic anti-inflammation, synergistic anticancer, synergistic analgesic, synergistic antibacterial, synergistic blood-activation, and so on. In this review, we summarize the latest research on the main chemical constituents and pharmacological activities of these two natural resins, along with chemical and pharmacological studies on the combination of the two.
