Jonathan Phillips' umfassende Monografie zur Geschichte der Kreuzzüge richtet sich ausdrücklich an ein breites, nicht akademisches Lesepublikum. Chronologisch stellt der Londoner Geschichtsprofessor anhand zahlreicher christlicher und muslimischer Quellen in spannender und höchst unterhaltsamer Form die Kreuzzüge sowie ihre prominenten und weniger bekannten Akteure vor. Dabei schildert Phillips nicht nur die eigentlichen Kämpfe um Jerusalem, sondern stellt die Kreuzzüge auch als politische Idee mit wechselndem geografischem Bezug - auch in Europa - dar. Im letzten Kapitel schlägt er einen Bogen in die Neuzeit und liefert eine Rezeptionsgeschichte vom Barock bis zu George W. Bush und Osama Bin Laden. Die Kapitel werden durch Schwarz-Weiß-Abbildungen eingeleitet, der Band wird durch einen umfangreichen Anhang mit Anmerkungen, Literaturverzeichnis und Personenregister ergänzt. Über mehr als 250 Jahre wechselten dort Herrscher und Beherrschte; ungezählte Opfer auf Seiten der Eroberer wie der Eroberten waren die Bilanz. Kreuzzüge wurden aber auch in anderen Religionen und mit anderen Motiven geführt, die uns heute oft nicht mehr nachvollziehbar oder gar verwerflich erscheinen. Der britische Historiker Jonathan Phillips zeichnet eines der legendenreichsten Kapitel des Mittelalters nach. Er erläutert die Logik der damaligen Akteure und entwirrt die verschlungene Geschichte der Heiligen Kriege. Phillips setzt sich zudem kritisch mit der Instrumentalisierung des Begriffs Kreuzzug durch manchen Ideologen der Neuzeit und der Moderne auseinander.
