Im Rahmen der gut eingeführten Studienreihe Biowissenschaften spricht der primär für Studenten geschriebene Band Ökologie darüber hinaus einen großen Kreis von Interessenten an: Schüler, Lehrer, naturinteressierte Laien. Sie werden mit den wichtigsten Grundlagen, Prinzipien, Fakten, Begriffen und Vorstellungen der Ökologie bekanntgemacht, wobei weder Vollständigkeit noch abstrakte Ableitung der Gesetzmäßigkeiten zu mathematischen Formeln angestrebt werden. Vielmehr wird versucht, das Denken in Beziehungsgefügen zu fördern und die Vielfalt und Komplexität der in der Natur herrschenden Wechselwirkungen aufzuzeigen, die zwischen unbelebten Elementen (Faktoren) und den Organismenverbänden sowie zwischen den Organismen bestehen und in Ökosystemen mehr oder weniger abgrenzbar sind. Dabei werden auch dei vom menschen bewirkten Veränderungen einbezogen, Fragen der eigentlichen Humanökologie aber ausgeklammert (s. Band Freye in der gleichen Reihe).
