Neben Kelch, Patene und Hostiendose traten nun - wie bereits im frühen Christentum - große Kannen für den Abendmahlswein. Für das evangelische Abendmahl sind seit der Reformation kostbare Werke der Goldschmiedekunst von hohem theologischem, kirchgeschichtlichem und künstlerischem Wert entstanden. Sie spiegeln in ihrer unglaublichen Vielfalt die Geschichte des Protestantismus während dreier Jahrhunderte in einer Fülle von Facetten. Nahezu alle Abendmahlsgeräte sind expressis verbis fromme Stiftungen der Gläubigen. Vielfach werden sogar bewegende Schiksale, die von Krieg, Krankheit und Tod berichten, auf den Geräten der Nachwelt überliefert. So wie die Protestanten die überkommenen katholischen Kirchen weiternutzten, so verwendeten sie auch die Meßkelche weiter bis auf den heutigen Tag. Daher kann man sagen, daß nirgends soviele mitteralterliche Kelche bewahrt und oftmals im Gebrauch geblieben sind, wie in lutherischen Kirchen Deutschlands. In diesem aufwändig gestalteten und reich bebilderten Werk werden diese liturgischen Geräte erstmals zusammenfassend vorgestellt und gewürdigt
