Content: The Oxford Handbook of Early Christian Apocrypha' addresses issues and themes that arise in the study of early Christian apocryphal literature. It discusses key texts including the Gospel of Thomas, the Gospel of Mary, the Gospel of Peter, letters attributed to Paul, Peter, and Jesus, and acts and apocalypses written about or attributed to different apostles. Part One consists of authoritative surveys of the main branches of apocryphal literature (gospels, acts, epistles, apocalypses, and related literature) and Part Two considers key issues that they raise. These include their contribution to our understanding of developing theological understandings of Jesus, the apostles and other important figures such as Mary. It also addresses the value of these texts as potential sources for knowledge of the historical Jesus, and for debates about Jewish-Christian relations, the practice of Christian worship, and developing understandings of asceticism, gender and sexuality, etc.0The volume also considers questions such as which ancient readers read early Christian apocrypha, their place in Christian spirituality, and their place in contemporary popular culture and contemporary theological discourse.--

Series Statement: Interdisciplinary studies in ancient culture and religion 18
Content: This volume brings together a selection of papers presented at two conferences on Jewish-Christian interaction in Antiquity held in Leuven and Aix-en-Provence in 2013 and 2014. It aims to introduce a different approach to this crucial topic and some new issues following from this. Specialists of Ancient Judaism, Early Christianity, Patristics, Late Antiquity, Rabbinic Studies, Papyrology, Epigraphy, Hagiography, and Gnosticism have focused on such topics as the consequences of the Jewish wars for the relations between Jews and Christians in Palestina, the cultural and religious exchange between the two communities in Alexandria, Smyrna, Syria, the Jewish-Christian polemics in Rabbinic literature, the papyrological and epigraphic evidences of the Jewish and Christian presence in Egypt and Rome, the coexistence of Jews and Christians in Northern Italy, Hispania, North Africa, Gaul, etc. The papers are arranged chronologically (from the 1st to the 7th century CE) as well as geographically (the Eastern and Western part of the Roman Empire). The volume offers both "general surveys" and "case studies", each of them exploring different aspects of Jewish-Christian interaction

Content: The Early Church has produced a diversified and influential tradition of commenting on the Bible. The tradition is rich in content, in methods, and in the goals pursued. The present volume offers a selection of papers read at an international colloquium held in Leuven in December 2018. Basically, three guidelines were followed in selecting the material: language, representative authors, and the wish to cover various parts of the New Testament. Three of the ten essays deal with Greek authors. Origen takes a place of honour, and through him is also heard the voice of one of the oldest Christian commentators, Heracleon. The third one is Theodore of Mopsuestia, the major representative of the non-Alexandrian tradition, averse of an allegorical reading of the Bible. The Latins are represented by their two greatest exegetes (Jerome and Augustine), a recently rediscovered gospel commentator (Fortunatianus), two commentators on Paul (Marius Victorinus and Ambrosiaster), an influential commentator of the Apocalypse (Victorinus of Pettau), and an author who was instrumental in transmitting the legacy of the ancient Church to a new era (Bede).
Note: Includes indexes , The exegetical method of Heracleon's Hypomnēmata / Carl Johann Berglund -- Origenes als Interpret des Neuen Testaments: Auslegungsgeschichtliche Perspektiven und hermeneutische Ansätze anhand der neuen Psalmenhomilien / Lorenzo Perrone -- The Old Testament and rhetorical technique in Theodore of Mopsuestia's Commentaries on the Epistles of Paul / Cornelis Hoogerwerf -- "ut non ordo lectionis sed rationis intellegatur" (in Apoc.
