Virtuos gelingt es Powers, trotz der Komplexität der Handlung und seiner Ausflüge in die Welt der Musik und der Physik, sein Werk gut lesbar zu gestalten. Seine Protagonisten sind vom Traum der Gleichheit unabhängig von der Hautfarbe beseelt. "Vielleicht kann der Fisch auch fliegen. Und der Vogel schwimmen. Und das Nest bauen sie auf dem Wasser."
