Content: Made for Swedish television, Bergman's 2000 TV-movie is a typically intense dramatisation of the behind-the-scenes making and the inspiration behind The Phantom Carriage... Filmed as a TV-drama from a script by Per Olov Enquist, The Image Makers (Bildmarkarna) is however pure Bergman, - an intense drama of passion and fury, of bitter words and violent emotions, that agonises over the nature of art and creativity, of seeing filmmaking as "a reflection in a mirror" of one's own life, but in a manner that "transforms life's filth" into art, and thereby helps us to come to an accommodation with ourselves and our lives. The Image Makers makes perfect material for this typical Bergman meditation on the relationship between life and art, on the bonds between father and child, and the relationship between director and the performer. It's not unlike many similar treatments of Bergman's own, most notably After The Rehearsal and his final film Saraband. As an important early influence on the director, The Image Makers' look behind the scenes of Sjöström and The Phantom Carriage adds a further dimension to the personal nature of the subject for Bergman, and the drawing together of all these elements is treated masterfully in his film. Whether based on some measure of truth or a complete work of fiction, it's nonetheless a perfect accompaniment for a DVD edition of The Phantom Carriage which deepens your respect and appreciation for the film, for Bergman and for art in general.
