Murmelstein (1905-1989) war der letzte "Judenälteste" im Getto Theresienstadt. Murmelstein (1905-1989), ab 1931 Rabbiner in Wien, wurde im Januar 1943 nach Theresienstadt deportiert. Ab September 1944 war er dort der letzte "Judenälteste". Nach Ende des 2. Weltkrieges zog er nach Rom. Immer wieder wurde ihm Kollaboration mit den Nationalsozialisten vorgeworfen. 1961 meldete er sich als Zeuge im Eichmann-Prozess, der in Jerusalem stattfand, wurde aber nicht eingeladen. Erst in den letzten Jahren wurde seine Rolle als vermeintlicher Verräter hinterfragt, nicht zuletzt durch den Film von Claude Lanzmann "Der letzte der Ungerechten". Dieses Buch erschien 1961 in Italien und liegt nun erstmalig in deutscher Übersetzung vor. Ausführlich beschreibt Murmelstein seine Rolle als "Judenältester" und geht auf Adolf Eichmann ein, dem er in seiner Funktion mehrfach traf. Dieses Buch ist ein wichtiges historisches Dokument vor allem für Wissenschaftler und historisch Interessierte, die sich mit dem Getto Theresienstadt und der Rolle der Judenräte beschäftigen. Es leistet einen wichtigen Beitrag zu den Debatten um die Darstellung und Bewertung der historischen Rolle Murmelsteins. (3) (Larissa Dämmig)
