Lange galt der Neandertaler als ein Wesen, dessen Körperkräfte gewaltig, mit dessen Verstandesleistungen es aber nicht weit her war. Inzwischen hat ihn jedoch die Wissenschaft rehabilitiert und es wird nur noch darüber gestritten, ob es überhaupt Unterschiede zwischen ihm und dem Homo sapiens gibt. Auch der spanische Paläontologe Juan Luis Arsuaga ist der Auffassung, dass die Neandertaler dem Cromagnon-Menschen geistig fast ebenbürtig waren. Er glaubt aber, dass ihr Stimmtrakt nur die Erzeugung zweier Vokale zuließ und dass sie deshalb nicht besonders gut mit Symbolen umgehen konnten. Hierin brachte es der Cromagnon zum Virtuosen und das ermöglichte es ihm, sich in seine Artgenossen hineinzuversetzen und das Verhalten von Dingen und Lebewesen zu verstehen, indem er sie vermenschlichte. Arsuaga betont aber, dass die Anfänge des menschlichen Geistes bis auf den Homo ergaster zurückgehen - dem ersten sprechenden Primaten. Das Buch ist in Spanien zum Bestseller geworden. Auch deshalb, weil Arsuaga ein sehr guter Erzähler ist und weil er fast ohne jeden Fachjargon auskommt. Nachdrücklich empfohlen. (2)
