Eine neurotische und kapriziöse Frau, die versucht, mit Hilfe des Alkohols ihre schmutzige Vergangenheit zu vergessen, sucht Zuflucht bei ihrer Schwester. Als der brutale Schwager ihre hoffnungsvolle Freundschaft mit einem schüchternen Mann zerstört und sie vergewaltigt, verwirrt sich ihr Geist endgültig: sie muss in die Psychiatrie eingeliefert werden. Kazan, der schon die Broadway-Uraufführung des Stücks von Tennessee Williams inszenierte, führt auch in dieser (theaternahen) Filmfassung Regie. Ein düsteres psychologisches Drama, sehr effektvoll gespielt.(Lexikon des internationalen Films)
