Abstract: A thermoacoustic cooler of miniature scale with a micro-machined stack has been numerically modeled and experimentally realized. deltae and Fluent were used to perform the numerical modeling and simulation. The acoustic pressure, velocity, and temperature profiles in the stack and exchangers were simulated. The stack is manufactured using MEMS technology for precise dimension control and flexible geometry design. The MEMS stack as thick as 4.2 mm with high aspect ratio (1/50) thin rib structures, 10 to 15 μm, have been realized. Commercially available PZT drivers were initially used to deliver acoustic power into the resonator at around 4 kHz. A more powerful acoustic driver design using PLZT is under development. The simulation result, device performance, and system integration will be reported. [Work supported by DARPA.]

Abstract: The aim of this study is to observe the tonal acquisition in a pair of fraternal twins from 1 to 3 years old, making a comparison between a child with cochlear implant (Child A) and a child with normal hearing (Child B). Spontaneous data were transcribed and later tone duration and tonal slope were measured by Praat. Four main tones in Mandarin were analyzed: high-level, high-rising, high-falling, and low-falling tones. Major findings are: 1) Tone duration of Child B is longer than that of Child A by 1.2-1.7 times. The average of tone duration in Child A is 250ms-260ms; 2) In Child A, high-level tones show the shortest duration among the four main tones, and high-rising tones are the longest; 3)Tonal slope of Child A is flatter than in Child B. The absolute value of tonal slope is higher in Child B; 4) Children control high-level tone the best, followed by high-rising, then high-falling, and low-falling the last.

Abstract: This article utilizes Van Dijk’s socio-cognitive approach as a theoretical framework to demonstrate how news translators ideologically construe solidarity in translated newspaper commentaries about the Economic Cooperation Framework Agreement (ECFA) signing between Taiwan and China. Using a corpus of 26 Chinese commentaries from the Liberty Times in Taiwan and their English translations from the Taipei Times as data, this article (1) compares the context models, together with relevant ideological forces, constructed by the news translators and the original writers and (2) investigates how contextual variations guide the translators to make inter-subjective positioning shifts through engagement resources. The results reveal that the shifts identified in the translated headlines and arguments (including the change in dialogic nature and the notable addition of dialogically expansive expressions) were performed by the translators to establish presumably appropriate solidarity relations (i.e. tolerance-based solidarity) and to align the writers and the potentially diverse target audience, at whom the translated pieces are aimed. In this way, the translators can achieve the goals of translating commentaries while adequately responding to the pro-independence ideology of the Taipei Times and the professional ideology of the news translators as media practitioners.

Abstract: Vowel production in two Mandarin-learning children was recorded from birth to 8 years old. The present study is the report of the 8th year. Major findings are: 1) Starting from 5 years of age, vowels with nasal endings show similar frequency as diphthongs. Girl subject used vowels with nasal endings more frequently than boy subject; 2) Decrease of F1 F2 values is continuously observed in boy subject. As to girl subject, up to 8 years of age, no obvious change in formant values was found; 3) F1 values are more stable than F2 values, especially in [i, u]. They appeared to acquire jaw movement sooner than tongue movement. Although a general trend of reduction in variability can be found from 4 years on, there seems to be more fluctuation of F2 values at 7-8 years of age in both subjects; 4) The trend of reduction of vowel areas was found to start at around 4 years old for boy and at 6 years old for girl; 5) No obvious decline in fundamental frequencies was found at 7-8 years of age in both subjects. This investigation was supported through funds from National Science Council in Taiwan (NSC 99-2410-H-006 -102-MY2).
