Die vor deutschen Gerichten der unmittelbaren Nachkriegszeit verhandelten Strafverfahren wegen NS-Verbrechen standen lange im Schatten der alliierten Kriegsverbrecherprozesse und der seit Ende der 1950er Jahre mit neuem Elan durchgeführten deutschen Verfahren wie dem Frankfurter Auschwitzprozess. Mit dem Obersten Gerichtshof für die Britische Zone (1947-50) lenkt die vorliegende geschichtswissenschaftliche Studie das Augenmerk auf einen wichtigen Protagonisten jener frühen Strafverfolgungspraxis. Erstmals wird die Rechtsprechung dieses einzigen für eine ganze Besatzungszone zuständigen deutschen Revisionsgerichts zu Verbrechen gegen die Menschlichkeit auf breiter Quellenbasis analysiert und herausgearbeitet, dass sie einen wegweisenden, aber schnell verdrängten Beitrag zur juristischen Aufarbeitung von NS-Unrecht bedeutete. Dabei erscheint das Gericht als Akteur einer umkämpften „Vergangenheitspolitik durch Strafrecht“ und wird zum Gegenstand der juristischen Zeitgeschichte.
