Content: Divine Inspiration – Seven Principles of Islamic Architecture explores the relationship between Muslims and their beliefs, manifested in the built environment. Just as Islam embodies a way of life and serves as a cohesive force amongst ethnically and culturally diverse peoples, it also contains a conspicuous aesthetic dimension. There is no essential difference between sacred and secular art in Islam. This allows Islamic architecture to symbolise the spiritual path of the religion, transcending the temporal considerations of form and function. Through the study of seven key religious beliefs, a cross-section of Islamic life and practice is united with the corresponding architectural principles. By integrating religion into all facets of life, and life itself into the rhythms and patterns of its values, Islam manages to create a sense of unity that is reflected in architecture that has been consistently and universally admired.

Content: Confounding the expectations of many observers, Muslim women have occupied positions of power for as long as Islam has existed. These roles range from the trading might of the Prophet Muhammad's first wife, Khadija, to the more formal status of the 12th century Queen Arwa of Yemen. The Qur'an alludes to women of authority from as long ago as the Queen of Sheba and Asiyah bint Muzahim, wife of the Egyptian Pharaoh during the distant days of Moses. In more recent times, the political leadership of Islamic states such as Pakistan and Bangladesh has drawn heavily on the female half of the population. Faith & Power: Women in Islam explores a rich history that has often been overlooked or deliberately ignored. Examining the lives of these women, and the attitudes shown towards them, the Islamic Arts Museum Malaysia is also able to provide a physical dimension with artefacts from a wide range of times and places. Jewellery, clothing and the accoutrements of power bring new vigour to the lives of forgotten queens, consorts and wielders of influence from behind the throne.

Content: Accompanying the exhibition 'En Route to Mecca: Pilgrims' Voices throughout the Centuries' is a publication that provides an informative look at this highly significant annual event. Nothing embodies the universal nature of Islam better than Hajj, with pilgrims converging from every corner of the earth. The aspect of Hajj that receives less coverage is how the pilgrims reach their goal. Although it is often referred to as the "journey of a lifetime", there is remarkably little attention given to the pilgrims' means of travel. 'En Route to Mecca' focuses on the sense of anticipation and adventure that the faithful have always encountered on their way to fulfilling this Pillar of Islam. Reflections of this journey can be seen in pilgrims' thoughts and actions as well as in works of art. A museum can offer more than beautiful objects to look at. It can also tell a story, and there are few better stories than those of the men and women through the ages who have completed Hajj.
