Abstract: This paper offers a detailed review of the UK’s trade performance during the COVID‐19 crisis and reflects on how this may be revived. During 2020, UK goods exports contracted more sharply than those of its international peers. Statistics suggest that UK had a deeper decline and slower recovery than Germany, Italy, Spain and the US. Further, the trends from 2017 to 2019 show a weakening in the UK’s global competitiveness, suggesting a more persistent development against the backdrop of productivity slowdown and Brexit uncertainty. We analyse the confluence of internal and external factors that impact on UK trade and emphasise the importance of boosting productivity in the recovery from the COVID crisis and Brexit.

Abstract: Small objects in traffic scenes are difficult to detect. To improve the accuracy of small object detection using images taken by unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV), this study proposes a feature-enhancement detection algorithm based on a single shot multibox detector (SSD), named composite backbone single shot multibox detector (CBSSD), which uses a composite connection backbone to enhance feature representation. First, to enhance the detection effect of small objects, the lead backbone network, VGG16, is kept constant, and ResNet50 is added as an assistant backbone network, and the residual structure in ResNet50 is used to obtain lower feature information. The obtained lower feature information is then fused to the lead network through feature fusion, allowing the lead network to retain rich lower feature information. Finally, the lower feature information in the prediction layer increases. The experimental results show that CBSSD has a significantly higher recognition rate and a lower false detection rate than conventional algorithms, and it still maintains a good detection effect under low illumination. This is of great significance to small object detection using images taken by UAVs in traffic scenes. Furthermore, a method to improve the SSD algorithm is proposed.

Abstract: – The purpose of this study is to comprehensively examine the factors that influence the adoption of radio frequency identification (RFID) in the logistics industry in Taiwan, and to objectively identify the key factors (KFs) for successful adoption. Design/methodology/approach – First, the factors were collected from a review of the literature, and then arranged in a three-layer hierarchical table. The fuzzy analytic hierarchical process (FAHP) was then used to determine the weighting of each factor, based on the opinions of various logistics professionals. The acceptable advantage concept of VlseKriterijumska Optimizacija I Kompromisno Resenje (VIKOR) was then used to identify the KFs. Findings – Nine important factors were identified from the total of eighteen factors, with a total accumulative weight of 64.68 percent, and from these, four KFs were determined: meeting the demands of clients, sharing real-time information, creating advantages in overall delivery, and reducing operational errors. Practical implications – The results show that the logistics industry in Taiwan should focus on the improvement of four KFs when adopting RFID. Eight practical implications of this study are also discussed in the paper. Originality/value – This study used multi-criteria decision-making (MCDM) tools to obtain the importance (weighting) of each factor and to identify the KFs that influence the adoption of RFID. The research results can serve as a reference for the logistics industry, enabling firms to better allocate their resources when adopting RFID, and thus, to achieve a good outcome at lower cost and with greater efficiency.
