Abstract: Aim: Work-related musculoskeletal disorders and associated musculoskeletal pain among intensive care nurses are important, as these factors may be related to presenteeism and work engagement. The aim of this study was to investigate the potential association of musculoskeletal pain with presenteeism and work engagement among intensive care nurses. Material and Method: This descriptive study was carried out with members of the Turkish Society of Critical Care Nurses. All the participants completed a questionnaire, which included questions about general demographic data and occupational musculoskeletal exposures (Occupational Safety and Health Administration [OSHA] Ergonomic Assessment Checklist). To measure pain, work engagement and presenteeism, the following instruments were used: The Brief Pain Inventory Short Form (BPI SF), Utrecht Work Engagement Scale (UWES-17) and Stanford Presenteeism Scale-6 (SPS-6). This study was performed in 2021, and the questionnaire was distributed via email to the database of Turkish Society of Critical Care Nurses. Results: Our study was completed with 153 intensive care unit nurses. Among the study population, 76.5% (n=117) of the nurses had chronic musculoskeletal pain, 80% of whom had exposure to lifting heavy weights. There was a weak negative correlation between pain and work engagement, as shown by the BPI SF pain interference subscale and the vigour subscale of the UWES-17 (p=0.04, r=-.166). There was also a weak negative correlation between pain and presenteeism according to the BPI SF pain interference subscale and SPS-6 (p=0.04, r=-.193). There was no statistically significant association between workplace ergonomic exposures, presenteeism, work engagement and the presence of chronic musculoskeletal pain. Conclusion: Neither chronic musculoskeletal system pain nor pain intensity was significantly correlated with work engagement, occupational musculoskeletal exposures or presenteeism. However, musculoskeletal pain-related effects on daily activities of living had a negative impact on work engagement (vigour) and presenteeism.

Abstract: Objectives: In this study, we gave information about appropriate working position to the office workers who have low back pain for last 3 months and we aimed to determine the effect of this intervention on frequency and level of low back pain and functionality of the workers. Materials and Methods: This study was an interventional study. Data were collected in September 2017 and December 2017 using face to face interview method. Information was given by a one-hour conference and distributing 4 informative brochures between October 2017 and November 2017. Results: 409 persons participated in the study and 141 of them who had low back pain for last 3 months formed the intervention group. 59.7% of the participants noted that they usually perform desk work. Logistic regression analysis showed that low back pain was 3,25 times more frequent among women than men, and 2,41 times more frequent among workers who had non-communicable disease. Among workers who had low back pain and attended the conference and read at least one brochure, mean Visual Analog Scale score was 5,97±1,2 before intervention and 5,03±1,1 after intervention (p 〈 0,001) and mean Roland Morris Low Back Pain and Disability Questionnaire score were and 9,98±1,7 before intervention, and 8,91±1,3 after intervention, respectively (p 〈 0,001). No difference was determined among workers who didn’t attend any of these two interventions (p 〉 0,05). Conclusions: Considering the effect of intervention, this result shows that implementation of intervention with health promotion approach at workplace is an appropriate method for reducing severity of low back pain and increasing functionality.

Abstract: Objective: The number of occupational diseases are lower than expected in Turkey. We aimed to estimate the number of occupational diseases, work-related diseases, and deaths due to occupational exposures by using international estimations of attribution of workplace in this descriptive study. Methods: The attributable fraction values to occupation for selected diseases and deaths were compiled from the literature. Information on these diseases and deaths in Turkey was obtained from national burden of disease studies and statistics of Turkish Statistical Institute. The estimated number of occupational diseases, work-related diseases and deaths due to occupational exposures were calculated by using the number of diseases and deaths in Turkey and by the fraction of occupational exposures by using literature. Results: Based on the data of national burden of disease studies in Turkey; 321,868 musculoskeletal disorders, 79,232 to 95,845 circulatory system diseases, 38,994 to 56,992 chronic obstructive pulmonary diseases, 14,563 to 19,858 asthma cases, 29,550 hearing losses, and 4,902 to 16,341 cancer cases are estimated to be work-related. According to the Turkish Statistical Institute data, the number of deaths due to occupational causes was estimated to be 8,143 in circulatory system diseases; 1,913 in malignant tumors; and 2,130 in respiratory system diseases. However, the lowest and the highest number of occupational diseases announced by the Social Security Institution between 2007 and 2016 is 371 and 1,208, respectively. Conclusion: There are deficiencies in the diagnosis and reporting of occupational diseases. In order to plan and implement preventive actions, data should be reported in a large scale and reliable manner.

Abstract: Objective: The specialty of occupational medicine is newly developing in Turkey and the number of specialists and the specialty clinics are very few. The aim of this study is to present the first two-year data of an occupational medicine outpatient clinic. This clinic is unique as it is the first outpatient clinic in a secondary health care center in Turkey (except dedicated occupational disease hospitals), and the first residency-trained occupational medicine specialist in Turkey was running this clinic. The data will be compared with national numbers in order to show if these clinics make a difference in diagnosis and notification of occupational diseases. Materials and Methods: The data is collected from the hospital database between 2017 August to 2019 August who applied to Occupational Diseases Clinic in the hospital. Only the patients who were referred by a physician or applied themselves with suspicion of an occupational disease are included to the study. The patients who applied for periodic examinations, fitness for work evaluations are not included. Results: A total of 491 patients were included to the study. 444 of them did not have a prior diagnosis of occupational disease. Of these patients, 162 (36.4%) were diagnosed with an occupational disease. 42.6 % of these diagnoses were pneumoconiosis. Conclusion: Occupational diseases are underdiagnosed and/or underreported in Turkey. A single center dedicated to occupational diseases made a substantial increase in the number of occupational diseases in two years. In conclusion, these clinics would help improving recognition of occupational diseases.

Abstract: Objective: In this study, it was aimed to determine the improvements that need to be made by taking the opinions of the employees on this field on the duties, authorities, responsibilities and personal rights of the occupational medicine specialists in Turkey and to share with the relevant people. Methods: It was a modified DELPHI study. It was carried out in 2 rounds between 1.05.2021- 26.07.2021 within the scope of Turkey through online surveys. The population of the study was occupational medicine specialization program trainers, specialists and minor specialization students in Turkey. Sample selection was not made. The invitation to participate was sent to the entire universe via e-mail.Questionnaires were sent to 108 people in both rounds. The frequency of participation in the surveys in the 1st and 2nd rounds, respectively, was 43.5% and 31.4%. In the first round of the study,a questionnaire consisting of open-ended questions was sent to the participants and the answers were evaluated by the researchers using thematic analysis method. In the second round,a new questionnaire was prepared by creating statements from the themes, and the participants were asked about their participation in the statements via an online survey. Results: In this study, it was observed that the occupational medicine specialization was not sufficiently recognized, job descriptions and personal rights were not clear, there were problems in the standardization of education, and choosing from different specialties could cause problems as well as advantages. Conclusion: There is a need for universities, relevant ministries and non-governmental organizations to cooperate together to solve the problems mentioned in the field of occupational medicine.

Abstract: Aim: Environmental exposure and maternal nutrition are vital for placental and fetal development during pregnancy. Essential elements such as Zinc (Zn), Copper (Cu) and Selenium (Se) are important elements that are needed for human growth and development. Research indicates that methylated arginines play a key role in pregnancy and offspring outcomes. The aim of the study was to compare the placental tissue levels of trace elements and methylated arginines. In addition, to evaluate this placental trace elements and methylated arginine levels in terms of placental and birth weight. Material and Methods: This is a case-control study with 133 pregnant women. Two groups were formed: women with higher risk of exposure to chemicals (working in chemistry, metal and other industrial sectors) and those with no risk of exposure to hazardous chemicals (house wives and working in other non-hazardous workplaces). Placenta Zn, Cu, Se, ADMA, SDMA, arginine, citrulline, homoarginine and L-NMMA levels were investigated. Results: There was a positive correlation between birth weight with Cu, L-NMMA, total methylarginines; there was a negative relationship between birth weight and ADMA, SDMA, arginine, citrulline. However, no statistically significant relationship was found between trace elements such as Zn, Cu and Se with methylated arginines, except for L-NMMA (r=0.178; p

Abstract: Objective: The effect of breast cancer on family life and marital status is one of the issues to investigate. Our aim in this study is to evaluate the frequency of divorce of breast cancer survivors and to investigate the demographic, disease, and treatment-related factors that may affect the divorce. Material and Methods: We performed this cross-sectional study between January 2020 and May 2020. Inclusion criteria were; women who were married at the time of breast cancer diagnosis, older than 18 years of age, and completed at least 6 months after breast cancer surgery and adjuvant chemotherapy/radiotherapy. The primary aim of this study was to find the marital dissolution rate of the patients after early-stage breast cancer diagnosis and adjuvant treatment. The secondary aim was to investigate the demographics and treatment-related factors affecting the marital status of breast cancer survivors. Results: The median age of 583 women included in the study was 47 (28-72). The median time to stay married was 291.0 months (min-max: 32.5-654.6). The most preferred surgical method in these patients was total mastectomy (n = 364, 62.4%). Adjuvant chemotherapy was applied to 505 (86.6%) patients, adjuvant endocrine therapy to 499 (85.6%) patients, and adjuvant radiotherapy to 460 (78.9%) patients. 21 (3.6%) patients divorced after diagnosis. In univariate analysis, surgery type, adjuvant chemotherapy, adjuvant radiotherapy, and adjuvant endocrine therapy were found to not affect the divorce. Conclusion: In our study, it was observed that the frequency of divorce was higher in breast cancer survivors than the general population, and breast surgery type and adjuvant treatments did not cause an increase in the risk of divorce.
