Abstract:
We Francji Zagładę ocalało 75 procent Żydów francuskich. Pomoc niesiono w ramach inicjatyw indywidualnych, struktur wzajemnej pomocy, organizacji ruchu oporu – głównie żydowskiego. Autor rekonstruuje sytuację prawną, podział administracyjny i działania wojenne, poziom zaangażowanie SS i SD a także francuskich kolaborantów w okresie 1940–1944, które tworzyły specyficzne warunki prawne i atmosferę, w jakiej mogli działać Francuzi. Brak regulacji zabraniających Francuzom udzielania Żydom pomocy, podobnie jak brak przepisów o separacji Żydów od nie-Żydów, stanowił dla SS jedno z najpoważniejszych utrudnień w realizacji „ostatecznego rozwiązania”. Niemcy próbowali zastraszyć francuskie społeczeństwo. Równolegle do aresztowań Żydów rozpracowywano struktury organizacji pomocowych i aresztowano podejrzanych o udzielanie schronienia. W 1943 r. obok SS do realizacji „ostatecznego rozwiązania” włączyła się także SD, która pozyskała znaczną liczbę kolaborujących Francuzów. Niemcy zyskali siłę napędową tropienia Żydów, co zwiększyło liczbę aresztowań. W 1944 r. wznowienie działań wojennych we Francji spowodowało, że stała się ona dla Niemców terenem wrogim. Zaostrzono represje, polityka „ostatecznego rozwiązania” nie opierała się już tylko na aresztowaniach i deportacjach, ale dziesiątkach egzekucji Żydów przeprowadzonych przez Niemców i ich francuskich popleczników. Każde pogłębienie brutalności i represji pociągało za sobą zwiększenie udzielonej pomocy.
