Abstract: The purpose of this exploratory study is to examine whether performance of microenterprises located in a microenterprise zone (MEZO) in China is positively related to key management practices, entrepreneurial orientation, marketing capability, and technology capability. The paper aims to introduce the concept of MEZOs as a supplemental tool for governments to strengthen microenterprise activity. Design/methodology/approach A total of 150 randomly selected microenterprises located in a MEZO in Changchun, an industrial city in Northeast China, completed a survey consisting of a three‐part measure of microenterprise performance developed by Zinger et al. and entrepreneurial orientation. Factor analysis was performed on 11 management issues and correlation analysis was performed. Findings The study found that key management practices, marketing capability, and technology capability of microenterprises in MEZOs do have a positive impact on performance sales, net profit, and growth. Research limitations/implications The study's results are limited by a sample in one city in one province of China collected in one month. The data are cross‐sectional rather than longitudinal. Sample bias may exist. Practical implications This study is valuable to government officials, policy makers, non‐government organizations and consulting firms as they examine new measures to unleash the economic power of microenterprises. Social implications MEZOs need to be explored as one solution to aide microenterprise development to improve the poverty level, create jobs, and stimulate economic activity. Originality/value To the authors' knowledge, this is the first exploratory study of the performance of microenterprises located in a MEZO in China. Through research, the factors that contribute to microenterprise performance and success can be better understood and the impact that the MEZO model has on microenterprises can be better delineated.

Abstract: The electrochemical sensing of nitric oxide (NO) molecules by metal‐organic framework (MOF) catalysts has been impeded, to a large extent, owing to their poor electrical conductivity and weak NO adsorption. In this work, incomplete in situ conversion of V 2 CT x ( T  = terminal atoms) MXene to MOF is adopted, forming MOF@MXene heterostructures, which outperform MXene and MOF monocomponents toward electrochemical NO sensing. Density functional theory (DFT) calculation results indicate metal‐like electronic characters for the heterostructure benefiting from the dominating contribution of the V 3 d orbitals of the metallic MXene. Moreover, plane‐averaged charge density difference shows substantial charge redistribution occurs at the heterointerfaces, producing a built‐in field, which facilitates charge transfer. Besides, molecular mechanics‐based simulated annealing calculation reveals greatly enhanced adsorption energies of NO molecules on the heterointerfaces than that on separate MOFs and MXenes. Hence, the facilitated charge transfer and preferential NO adsorption are responsible for the dramatically promoted performance toward NO sensing. The prudent design of MOF@MXene heterostructure may spur advanced electrocatalysts for electrochemical sensing.

Abstract: Extensive recent progress has been made on the design and applications of organic photothermal agents for biomedical applications because of their excellent biocompatibility comparing with inorganic materials. One major hurdle for the further development and applications of organic photothermal agents is the rarity of high‐performance materials in the second near‐infrared (NIR‐II) window, which allows deep tissue penetration and causes minimized side effects. Up till now, there have been few reported NIR‐II‐active photothermal agents and their photothermal conversion efficiencies are relatively low. Herein, optical absorption of π‐conjugated small molecules from the first NIR window to the NIR‐II window is precisely regulated by molecular surgery of substituting an individual atom. With this technique, the first demonstration of a conjugated oligomer (IR‐SS) with an absorption peak beyond 1000 nm is presented, and its nanoparticle achieves a record‐high photothermal conversion efficiency of 77% under 1064 nm excitation. The nanoparticles show a good photoacoustic response, photothermal therapeutic efficacy, and biocompatibility in vitro and in vivo. This work develops a strategy to boost the light‐harvesting efficiency in the NIR‐II window for cancer theranostics, offering an important step forward in advancing the design and application of NIR‐II photothermal agents.

    In: Journal of NeuroInterventional Surgery, BMJ, Vol. 14, No. 4 ( 2022-04), p. 321-325
Abstract: In this review and meta-analysis we sought to compare the efficacy and safety of direct endovascular thrombectomy (EVT) and bridging therapy for intravenous thrombolysis (IVT)-eligible patients with acute ischemic stroke caused by large vessel occlusions (AIS-LVO). Methods We searched Medline, Embase, and the Cochrane Library for published randomized clinical trials (RCTs) and observational studies providing outcomes of patients with IVT-eligible AIS-LVO who have undergone EVT with or without IVT. The primary outcome was the proportion of patients achieving a modified Rankin Scale (mRS) score of 0–2 at 90 days. The secondary outcomes included the rates of (1) an excellent outcome defined as an mRS score of 0 or 1 at 90 days, (2) mortality at 90 days, (3) symptomatic intracranial hemorrhage (sICH), (4) any type of intracranial hemorrhage (ICH), (5) successful recanalization, and (6) clot migration. Results We included three RCTs and six observational studies (4 of which were propensity score-adjusted studies) with a total of 3133 patients. In unadjusted and adjusted analyses, no differences in the rates of mRS scores 0–2, mRS scores 0–1, mortality at 90 days, sICH or successful recanalization were detected between patients with AIS-LVO who underwent direct EVT or bridging therapy. The patients treated with direct EVT had a lower risk ratio for any type of ICH and clot migration than did the patients treated with bridging therapy. Conclusion Compared with bridging therapy, direct EVT may be equally effective and yield a lower rate of ICH and clot migration in patients with AIS. Abstract: To investigate the clinical features, risk factors and underlying pathogenesis of cancer related subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH). Methods Clinical data of SAH in patients with active cancer from January 2010 to December 2020 at four centers were retrospectively reviewed. Patients with active cancer without SAH were matched to SAH patients with active cancer group. Logistic regression was applied to investigate the independent risk factors of SAH in patients with active cancer, after a 1:1 propensity score matching (PSM). A receiver operator characteristic curve was configured to calculate the optimal cut-off value of the joint predictive factor for cancer related SAH. Results A total of 82 SAH patients with active cancer and 309 patients with active cancer alone were included. Most SAH patients with cancer had poor outcomes, with 30-day mortality of 41.5%, and with 90-day mortality of 52.0%. The PSM yielded 75 pairs of study participants. Logistic regression revealed that a decrease in platelet and prolonged prothrombin time were the independent risk factors of cancer related SAH. In addition, receiver operator characteristic curve of the joint predictive factor showed the largest AUC of 0.8131, with cut-off value equaling to 11.719, with a sensitivity of 65.3% and specificity of 89.3%. Conclusion Patients with cancer related SAH often have poor outcomes. The decrease in platelet and prolonged prothrombin time are the independent risk factors of cancer related SAH, and the joint predictive factor with cutoff value equal to 11.719 should hence serve as a novel biomarker of cancer related SAH.

Abstract: This paper investigates the current psychological state of Chinese tourism practitioners and their career resilience during the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. It empirically examines the effects of COVID-19 on Chinese tourism practitioners' professional attitudes and their career belief in the future. The study is intended to guide enterprises and governments to design effective strategies/policies to deal with the effect of this unfavorable environment. Design/methodology/approach The sample consists of 442 tourism practitioners in 313 tourism enterprises in China. The data were collected via a targeted online survey based on a well-structured questionnaire. The data were analyzed using statistical procedures including multilevel regression analysis. Findings The study results show that Chinese tourism practitioners have strong career resilience in the face of current turbulent time. After testing, the model shows that career beliefs and social support have a significant positive impact on the professional attitudes of tourism practitioners, and that career resilience has a partial mediating effect on their career beliefs, social support and professional attitude. Originality/value This study enriches the existing literature on career belief, social support and career resilience. It provides a new interpretation on how career belief and social support impact career resilience and thus shape tourism practitioners' professional attitudes during pandemics.

Abstract: Until now, traditional western consumption theories have not been able to adequately explain the consumption behavior of Chinese residents in the economic transitional period. Based on annual data from 1986 to 2004, the purpose of this paper is to examine the excess sensitivity of consumption through a variable parameter model. Design/methodology/approach A regression model was used to analyse annual consumption data from 1986 to 2004 in China. Findings The analysis demonstrates excess sensitivity characteristic in Chinese residents' consumption in the economic transitional period. Research limitations/implications The paper concludes that in order to make the demand stimulation policy in China more effective, it is necessary to take a series of measures to correct the excess sensitivity of consumption, so as to establish a healthy cycle of national economy. The paper has only explained excess sensitivity of Chinese residents' consumption from the point of view of economics. While consumption is an economic problem as well as a social problem, those factors beyond economics should not be excluded from the analysis. Originality/value This paper differs from former studies in that previous scholars failed to take into consideration the special economic characteristics in China's transitional economy. The variable parameter model this paper employed takes full consideration of such unique factors as economic expectations and systems changes during the transitional period so as to better explain Chinese people's consumption behavior and provide a new perspective to make government policies stimulate domestic demand more effectively.
