Abstract:
En este artículo doy cuenta de la formación del discurso sobre la autocensura en la historiografía en los tratados sobre el arte de la historia de autores hispánicos de los siglos XVI y XVII (c. 1550 - c. 1650). Analizo las ideas de los tratadistas sobre las razones, las formas y los efectos de la autocensura en la escritura y en la difusión de la narrativa histórica, identifico las fuentes y las tradiciones de pensamiento clásicas en las que se inscriben estas ideas y examino su desarrollo específico en la tratadística historiográfica altomoderna. Mi análisis parte de la hipótesis de interpretación de que el discurso teórico concibió y reguló la autocensura no solo como un obstáculo para el libre y recto ejercicio de la historiografía, sino también como una medida que en diversas situaciones resultaba necesaria y beneficiosa para el desarrollo y la mejora de la disciplina.
