Abstract:
REB 57 1999 France p. 5 Bernard Flusin, Le Panégyrique De Constantin VII Porphyrogénète pour la translation des reliques de Grégoire le Théologien (BHG 728). — This Panegyric for the return of the relics of St Gregory of Nazianzus (BHG 728), ascribed to Constantine Porphyrogenitus, is preserved in two slightly different versions, one of which was delivered as a speech on the 19th January 946, the anniversary of the emperor's accession to the supreme power. The text is here edited and translated. In the introduction the text's sources and models (Gregory's Orations, two Panegyrics for the return of the relics of St John Chrysostom by Leo VI and Constantine VII, the Old Testament) are examined, thus explaining the meaning of the speech and the ceremony for which it was composed, involving Emperor, Patriarch and their holiness.
