Abstract: The knowledge in the behaviour and movement of endangered species is of key importance for the precise targeting and assessing the efficiency of nature conservation actions, especially considering vultures, which explore vast areas to locate ephemeral and unpredictable food resources. Therefore, a total of 51 Griffon Vultures ( Gyps fulvus ) from both the re-introduced population and the autochthonous Balkan Peninsula (Balkans) colonies have been tagged with GPS/GSM transmitters in recent years, in order to study their seasonal and spatial distribution. The current study presents the analysis of the high-resolution GPS location data, acquired between January 2016 and March 2021. A total of 1,138,383 locations (an average number of 23,716 ± 18,886 positions per bird, ranged between 2,515 and 76,431 of total fixes per bird; n=48) were used to estimate the home range size and identify the traditional foraging areas and roosting sites of the birds during the wintering, migration/roaming and summering periods. Our results reveal that Griffon Vultures movement activity and home range size varied considerably throughout the annual cycle, especially between their wintering and summering grounds, while exhibiting significant overlapping amongst the tracked individuals. Specifically, immature Griffon Vultures travel long distances across all Balkan Peninsula countries, but always gather with conspecifics, showing strong fidelity to active breeding/roosting sites. The total home range 95% area of the Griffon Vulture population on the Balkans was estimated at 39,986.4 km² and the 50% core area at 1,545.42 km² (n = 48). All tracked birds were found to either visit or frequently use ( & gt; 95% of the time) the same seven vulture key zones on the Balkan Peninsula – one in Serbia, one shared between North Macedonia and Bulgaria, one shared between Bulgaria and Greece, two entirely lying in Bulgaria, one in western Greece and one shared between Kvarner Archipelago islands in Croatia and the Julian Alps - Italy, Austria and Slovenia. Several smaller sub-zones were also defined within these general ones. The seven key zones form a coherent network and are used as stepping stones for Griffon Vultures during their migration movements and roaming, but also wintering and summering. The observed concentration tendency of Griffon Vultures on the Balkans and the predictability of their temporal and spatial presence should be used to precisely target, address and substantially increase the efficiency of the conservation measures in this marginal and, thus, still vulnerable meta-population.

Abstract: Abstract Parthenogenetic lineages are known to rapidly colonize large areas that become available after glacial periods as parthenogenetic reproduction is beneficial over mating when the favorable season is very short. The only obligatory parthenogenetic species of the largest bush-cricket subfamily Phaneropterinae is Poecilimon intermedius . It belongs to the Anatolio-Balkan lineage Poecilimon ampliatus species group and in contrast has a remarkably broad distribution from Central Europe to China, following the pattern of geographical parthenogenesis. In this study we provide a systematic revision of the P. ampliatus group based on mitochondrial (ND2) and nuclear (ITS) phylogeny. We estimate divergence times by applying secondary calibration on the ND2 tree to test for congruence between recent splits in the group and the Pleistocene climatic oscillations. We use ecological niche modelling to analyze the ecological requirements of the parthenogenetic P. intermedius and its sexually reproducing sister species P. ampliatus . By projecting on the conditions during the Last Glacial Maximum we outline the suitable areas for both species during the glacial cycles and discuss range shifts in response to climate change. Based on all results we hypothesize that the drought-tolerant P. intermedius originated during the recent glaciations in the southwestern part of its current range and rapidly radiated in a northeastern direction. Its sister species P. ampliatus , which is adapted to higher levels of precipitation, remained in the western Balkans, where populations retreated to higher altitudes during warming.

Abstract: Longidoruspolyae sp. n ., a bisexual nematode species found in the rhizosphere of pear tree ( Pyruscommunis L.), is described and characterised using an integrative approach. The new species has a female body length of 6.8–9.1 mm; a comparatively long odontostyle (114.0–127.5 μm); a narrow lip region (14.0–15.5 μm), anteriorly flattened and almost continuous with the body profile; pocket-like amphidial pouches long, deeply bilobed, and slightly asymmetrical, a guide ring at 37–42 μm from the anterior end; normal arrangement of pharyngeal glands; and a short bluntly rounded to hemispherical tail. Four juvenile stages identified: the first stage with a digitate tail, and the second and subsequent stages with a bluntly rounded tail. Males have one adcloacal pair and a row of 10 or 11 single ventromedian supplements; spicules 71.0–74.5 μm long. Based on morphometric data, the new species belongs to a group of species spread over Europe ( L.arthensis , L.silvae , L.uroshis ,), Iran ( L.kheirii ), and Syria ( L.pauli ), which share common characters such as amphidial fovea, lip region and tail shapes, similar odontostyle and body length, and similar first-stage juvenile tail shape. Codes for identifying the new species are A5, B2, C34, D3, E3, F45, G12, H1, I2, J1, K7. The phylogenetic analysis based on D2-D3 expansion domains of the rRNA gene revealed that the new species has the closest relationships with L.athesinus from Italy and three unidentified Longidorus spp. from USA ( Longidorus sp. 1, Longidorus sp. 2, and Longidorus sp. 6). New morphometric and molecular data (18S rRNA gene, ITS1-5.8S-ITS2 regions and D2-D3 28S rRNA gene sequences) for three populations of L.pisi from Bulgaria were obtained and variations between populations are discussed.

Abstract: OpenBiodiv is a biodiversity knowledge graph containing a synthetic linked open dataset, OpenBiodiv-LOD, which combines knowledge extracted from academic literature with the taxonomic backbone used by the Global Biodiversity Information Facility. The linked open data is modelled according to the OpenBiodiv-O ontology integrating semantic resource types from recognised biodiversity and publishing ontologies with OpenBiodiv-O resource types, introduced to capture the semantics of resources not modelled before. We introduce the new release of the OpenBiodiv-LOD attained through information extraction and modelling of additional biodiversity entities. It was achieved by further developments to OpenBiodiv-O, the data storage infrastructure and the workflow and accompanying R software packages used for transformation of academic literature into Resource Description Framework (RDF). We discuss how to utilise the LOD in biodiversity informatics and give examples by providing solutions to several competency questions. We investigate performance issues that arise due to the large amount of inferred statements in the graph and conclude that OWL-full inference is impractical for the project and that unnecessary inference should be avoided.

Abstract: Tumours arising from the spinal nerve roots are more common in men between the third and fourth decades of life, located mainly in the intradural space of the lumbar region. The clinical symptoms of spinal schwannomas and neurofibromas are similar and depend on the location of the tumour and its relationship to the spinal cord and nerve roots. The pain (radiculalgia and/or vertebralgia) is the earliest symptom, followed by sensory deficit, while motor deficits and sphincter disorders are late symptoms. Magnetic resonance imaging is the diagnostic tool of choice and should be performed when the disease is suspected, as early and accurate diagnosis is essential for treatment outcome. The treatment of these lesions is surgical aiming at total tumour resection that promotes neurological recovery and prevents from recurrences. Subtotal removal also provides favourable outcome but at higher recurrence rates. The aim of this literature review was to study some important characteristics of sporadic spinal schwannomas (SSS) and neurofibromas (SSN), i.e. those notassociated with neurofibromatosis type I and II.

Abstract: The current work presents the preliminary results of the Cinereous Vulture ( Aegypius monachus ) releases in the Balkan Mountains in 2018–2022, aiming at the species re-introduction in Bulgaria, where it was listed as locally extinct since 1985. The first imports and releases of Cinereous Vultures in Bulgaria started in 2018. Until mid-2022, 72 individuals were released in the Eastern Balkan Mountains (Kotlenska Planina SPA and Sinite Kamani Nature Park) and Vrachanski Balkan Nature Park. Of them, 63 immatures imported from Spain were released from aviaries and nine juveniles captive-bred in European zoos were released by hacking (fledging from an artificial nest). We compared the success in survival and establishment between the different release sites and methods used to adjust the ongoing technics and tactics and to support knowledge improvement for future similar projects. From the nine Cinereous Vultures released by hacking, the results were as follows: 1.00 fledging success, but only 0.22 survival in the first six months – combined period of acclimation, first migration and the first winter. All survivors from that period reached maturity into the wild, but all emigrated from the release site and settled elsewhere. Of the 63 individuals released by aviaries, 32 individuals were released in the Eastern Balkan Mountains (18 individuals are still alive – 0.56 survival; 14 individuals settled in the area, which accounts for 0.44 of all released birds and 0.78 of the survivors). Thirty-one individuals were released in Vrachanski Balkan Nature Park (23 individuals are still alive – 0.74 survival; 22 individuals settled in the area – 0.71 of all released birds and 0.96 of the survivors). Based only on aviary method comparison, the settling of the individuals in the release area was alike in the two sites. However, the Vrachanski Balkan Nature Park performed better in survival – both in acclimation and establishment periods. While comparing the release methods – hacking and release from the aviary – the following results were observed: the survival rate during acclimation was 0.86. Due to more considerable losses during the first migration and dispersal in the individuals released by hacking, the survival rate of 0.22 was significantly lower compared to 0.73 for the birds released from the aviary. Additionally, in both methods, a similar pattern in the first winter and spring migration dispersal was observed. Although the survival was equal in the released-by-hacking or aviary birds after the first year onwards, it is essential to note that the emigration of the hacked birds from the release site was 1.00. In comparison, the birds released from aviaries largely remained and settled in the release area ( & gt; 0.77 of the survivors). The cost of release and related acclimation, settling, dispersal and the first winter was the greatest: 0.12–0.17 per period, or cumulatively, it was about 0.27. Survival increased and stabilised to & gt; 0.90 after the first year in the wild and reached nearly 1.00 after two years in the wild onwards. Two distinct nuclei of the Cinereous Vulture were established along the Balkan Mountains – the Eastern Balkan Mountains with 18–23 individuals and four formed pairs using a territory of about 642.74 km 2 – 95% home range and 85.72 km 2 – 50% core area with center being the town of Kotel; and Vrachanski Balkan Nature Park with present 23–29 individuals, of which 2–3 pairs formed so far, using a territory of about 1,143.66 km 2 – 95% home range and 22.89 km 2 – 50% core area with center being the village of Zgorigrad. The species readily accepted breeding in artificial nest platforms built by professional arborists on different tree species – oak, beech, sycamore and pine. The only naturally built nests were on the ground (n = 2) (unsuccessful) and in Scots Pine (n = 1) (successful). In 2021 and 2022, in each of the two sites, the first successful reproductions were recorded, which marked the return of the Cinereous Vulture as breeding species – 28 years after the last occasional record of a single breeding pair in the country and 36 years after it was officially listed as locally extinct in Bulgaria.

Abstract: Introduction : Diabetic nephropathy is a major microangiopathic complication of type 2 diabetes and a leading cause of chronic kidney disease (CKD). Aim : To improve the diagnostic approach to early diagnosis of diabetic nephropathy in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus. Materials and methods : One hundred fifty patients were divided into three groups. Group 1 consisted of 67 patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (DM2) and diabetic nephropathy with stage 1 or 2 of CKD. Group 2 included 45 patients with DM2 without clinical and laboratory evidence for diabetic nephropathy. Group 3 had 38 healthy individuals. The polymorphism of the MTHFR C677T and PAI-14G/5G gene was determined by extracted genomic DNA from peripheral blood cells. All patients underwent a real-time PCR reaction. Serum creatinine, MDRD creatinine clearance, albumin/creatinine ratio were examined. Results : The correlation analysis we performed showed a very strong correlation of serum creatinine, creatinine clearance and albumin/creatinine ratio with the C677T polymorphism of the MTHFR gene and the 4G/5G polymorphism of the PAI-1 gene. We used descriptive statistics, ANOVA, and multiple comparisons; the level of significance was set at p & lt;0.05. Conclusions : 1. The presence of the T allele in the MTHFR gene determines the tendency to increase serum creatinine, decrease creatinine clearance, and increase the albumin/creatinine ratio in morning urine; 2. The presence of 4G allele in the PAI-1 gene determines the tendency to increase serum creatinine, decrease creatinine clearance, and increase the albumin/creatinine ratio in morning urine.

Abstract: In this work, we report a rare allele 29 at locus D2S1338, established during routine forensic practice in a case of first-degree kinship (parenthood). This rare allele variant 29 at locus D2S1338, to the best of our knowledge, is reported for the first time for the Bulgarian population. So far it has not been registered in studies of allele frequencies in the same locus for 20 population groups in Europe and Asia. The presentation of similar genotyping findings relating to rare/unexpected population genetic variation is very important for the examination and documentation of such anomalies. The analysis has been performed for 16 STR loci: D2S1338, SE33, D16S539, D18S51, TH01, D12S391, D3S1358, FGA, vWA, D21S11, D1S1656, D2S441, D8S1179, D19S433, D22S1045, D10S1248 and 2 sex determination systems – Amelogenin and Y indel, set in NGM DetectTM PCR Amplification Kit (Applied Biosystems). The use of allelic witnesses in the diagnostic practice is mandatory in the standard fragment DNA analysis. The allelic witness contains well-known preset alleles for the examined locus. Establishing alleles that are outside the factory preset is of importance for broadening the scope of the witness and heightening the accuracy of the analysis. Rare allelic variants significantly increase the strength of discrimination when DNA profiles are compared. In this regard, it is important to report any new information about the emergence of rare allele variants detected in a particular population group.

Abstract: This is the problem of the 8th International Experimental Physics Olympiad (EPO8). The task of the EPO8 is to determine Planck constant ħh/2 using the given set-up with LED. If you have an idea how to do it, do it and send us the result; skip the reading of the detailed step by step instructions with increasing difficulties. We expect the participants to follow the suggested items – they are instructive for physics education in general. Only the reading of historical remarks given in the first section can be omitted during the Olympiad without loss of generality. Participants should try solving as much tasks as they can without paying attention to the age categories: give your best.
